KAPEX REPAIR COSTS

Last week my 7y/o Kapex did the dreaded smoke and quit thing. Called Festool Knowing this was a common problem, I had hoped to obtain an approximate cost before spending $$$ to ship it back to them. No such luck! But they would send me a shipping box for $30! I suspect others on this forum have had this problem rectified by Festool and I would appreciate you sharing the costs associated therewith so I can decide if it is worth the money to do so. Thanks

The last publicly shared repair cost (3 years ago?) was $300 US or a bit more, covering the fix of the smoking motor. Shipping costs possibly were extra.

If fixed, the smoking motor should no longer happen, because the new part (also used in the REB model) seems to be reliable.

I had my 2014 Kapex repaired last year. Festool charged $375 plus $60 to ship the saw back to me. Shipping via UPS to Indiana from Louisiana was $180.

hard to give ya a price when they dont know whats wrong with it. But one thing i do know is when they finish with the repair it will be as good as it was from the factory. They go through the saw thoroughly and replace all the worn and broken parts.

If you dont want them to repair it they will simply reassemble it and return it to you at no cost. You pay to ship it to them they pay to ship it to you

Snip.

That's not what I recall. I think I've seen someone posting an image in this forum of a returned tool (forgot what it was) in a condition that was like after a cannibalization. Have they changed the re-assembly process? I don't know. Better ask to be sure.

I agree with you Chuck, it wouldn't be financially prudent on Festool's part to disassemble the tool, locate all of the issues, contact the customer only for the customer to say no and then reassemble the tool with all of the damaged/worn out parts. That could lead to some litigation issues if the customer then used the tool and something bad happened.

Festool DOES NOT reassemble your Kapex after they diagnose the issue!  I just got mine back yesterday and the estimate clearly stated, if you want it back, it comes back in pieces and the return shipping cost is $75.
Mine(2012 model) had the same smokin' and dying issue.  Cost before taxes, $747.39.  A little less than half the price of a new one.
So to make myself feel good, I told myself that is only a $62.28/yr upkeep fee to have a quality tool.  I'll take it.    JimE
