Kapex Stand w/ Systainer Storage

So for the past several months I've had this particular project on my "to-do" list but could never find the time to get it built.  Of course, over those months, my Festool collection has grown a good bit and I was getting tired of shuffling through Systainers so I decided to set aside some time this weekend and build my cabinet.

The build itself only took two sheets of plywood (with a little bit of scrap from a leftover project) and I used Accuride 14" full extension drawer glides for the shelves.  I cannibalized my Kreg Miter track from my previous miter saw stand and overall am extremely pleased.  This really streamlined my shop experience and if anyone is inspired by this particular project I have all the plans and cutlist that you can use (might need some tweaking for your particular setup)

Now, I can't take full credit for this; I was actually inspired by a similar build on this very board:  Kapex Storage

As far as estimated cost:

- Two Sheets of Baltic Birch Plywood:  $80 (I had a few Lowes coupons to save around $30)
- 14 14" Full Extension Accuride Drawer Slides:  Somewhere around $220
- Levelers:  ~$25 (these can probably be excluded, my garage slopes terribly near the opening)
- 2x6s for the toe-kick / base:  $15

Very nice set up!  I wanted to do exactly what you have done.  If you could share your plans and cut list, that would be very much appreciated.  I'm definitely going to put this idea on my to do list. My garage floor also slopes out, what levelers did you use? Do you have a measuring tape affixed to your Kreg track?

i think one of the things you have to consider before making sysports is how often do you use the tools inside of them and if they leave the shop to the site type work. It really annoys me to have to dig into the sys and pull out the needed tool i often use. other than looking pretty all show cased around the miter saw...they just take up storage space or other often used tools. I stored all my empty systainers up against the wall stacked in a high shelf away from everything.

Fair enough.  This setup works infinitely better than my last setup since my shop is much more streamlined.  Previously I was digging through various stacks of Systainers whereas now I can find what I need easily and the full extension slides prevent me from having to even remove the systainer from the shelf.

currently no, i use them too frequently to stow away. i dont do much job site work to store them away and take on the road. funny thing is that this is just a hobby of mine and i basically use them all week long.

the only thing i keep in systainers are abrasives,screws and some accessories. those systainers really take away valuable garage space so i just store them on a shelf high above.

Very nice setup.  I am looking to do something very similar in my woodshop.  Is that a Mini or a midi extractor?  36 mm hose?  I like how you have the clamps behind as well.  How much space between the wall and the cabinets?  Once again looks nice!

I’ve setup.  I personally like to put my tools away as I’m building and having sysports built into my workflow (like you’ve done) is the best way.  I’ve also found that there’s no better way to have a hybrid approach - easily accessible tools in the shop and still mobile when they need to go to the work outside the shop. 

If I had the space, I’d do exactly what you’ve done.

Nice design.  I added this page to my favorites.  I have a few Kapex stands saved.  I have about 10 or 11 feet along the back wall of my garage that is targeted for systainer storage and Kapex stand.  This is a project I want to do early this year.

I am in the process to do the exact same thing. I just cut out the drawers pieces last night.

If I may suggest for both cabinets put a 50mm (2") face strip at the top with round edge. It would preserve the edge and also add a finishing touch IMO.
