Kapex Videos and Pics

Unbelievable. I thought the kapex was a maybe on the want list. Then I watched the videos and see how festool takes everything to the next level. Holy crap.

Any idea when the launch for the US will occur? 2008? I am currently up-grading and re-organizing my shop and have the perfect spot for this.

I am new to this board but it has become very addictive and I have learned a great deal in a short period of time. I hope to be in a position to give back soon.

Thanks for the post.

Jim

You must have missed this thread:http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=158.0.    To wet your appetite, below are three pics from my FOG gallery.  (Warning!  Serious tool-port alert!)  ;D

Dan

p.s., I especially like the second one.  The Kapex weighs 47lbs.  My Bosch 4410L with stand adapter weighs 75lbs! (Ouch!)

Thanks Dan. I have not had the time to review all the back posts since finding the site but intend to do so. The kapex is now on my list. I just picked up the Domino last Saturday and still haven't had time in the shop to play with it.

Need to run thanks for the info again.

WOW i just had to get some paper towel to wipe up all the dribble.
My dealer is checking on when it will be available and im going to start paying it off as soon as he gives the nod ;D

I wish someone would go get one of these things already. I keep seeing these pictures and going back and forth on whether or not I'm going to want one. It still comes down to price, but getting some feedback from actual users could go a long way towards changing my mind. It just seems odd to me that nobody has posted on here yet that has one.

Matt, we got to get some more Aussies and Europeans posting here, there's too many Yanks here that don't have access to this stuff.

Dan, what kind of adapter is it that you keep referring to? I have a 4412 and I doubt it weighs over 50 lbs. I know my 12" Makita (LS1214) weighs 52 lbs, and I think its a good bit heavier than my Bosch. IIRC, the  10" Makitas (LS1013) are 47 lbs. I'm just confused where you are coming up with all the extra weight. Must be an awfully heavy adapter. The 47 lbs for the Kapex seems to me like it is just about the norm in terms of weight. Its basically equivalent to a 10" saw, and most other 10" sliders weigh in very close to that mark.

What am I missing here???

FWIW, the weight is irrelevant to me (actually, the heavier the better, IMO), I'm just trying to understand you better.

Lou,

The 4410 and 4412 both weigh 55lbs according to the specshttp://www.boschtools.com/tools/tools-detail?H=175981&G=54931&I=64804&T=1.  However, I'm pretty sure that is measured without blade, base extensions, and fence.  One review I read said that the weight of the 4410 was 67lbs.  With the adapter, it weighs 75 lbs based on actually weighing the 4410.  I weighed myself, picked up the saw, and then weighed myself again.  75lbs was the average of two tries.

The adapter comes with the Delta SM105WS portable miter saw stand:http://www.tylertool.com/delta24.html.  You bolt the saw to the adapter and then the adapter snaps on to the stand.  Good in theory, but...  I found that it's a hassle to hoist the saw+adapter into the right angled position to catch the stand rails just right.

Although it's compact and can be hung on the wall when folded, and it was inexpensive ($99 at Lowes), the stand was a waste of money.    It's difficult to work with and a hassle to set up and break down.  The support arms are difficult to adjust and are positioned wrong for the Bosch saw.  Part of the arm's flat part is behind the line of the saw fence.  So, only part of the support surface actually supports the board.

Regarding the weight of the saw, it probably doesn't make a difference if you have it permanently mounted on stand.  In my case, I have to drag it off a shelf, mount on a stand, and then reverse the process when done.  47lbs is doable; 75 lbs is a pain - literally and figuratively.

Regards,

Dan.

I agree with Dan, 47 lbs ain't nothing compared to the monster my Dewalt DW708, its heavy. I went a picked up the Hitachi 10" power miter box just to move from site to site when bevels were not needed...

Dan,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I guess I stand corrected on the weight of the Bosch saws. What I didn't realize until I just looked it up was that your 4410 is a slider and my 4412 isn't. That explains why my Bosch feels lighter than my Makita, I guess. I thought that only the "54" versions were sliders in both 10" and 12", obviously I was wrong. In the 12" models, the 5412 is the slider. Strange...

My point about the weight (heavier is better, IMO) has nothing to do with moving the saw around. Its just that a heavier saw is more stable when you just temporarily set it up at a jobsite. The heavy saws don't need to be fastend down. The lighter ones do as the tend to tip. 47 lbs or 77 lbs, neither is going to bother me much in terms of getting it out of the truck and so forth.

Lou,

Regarding weight, my brain agrees with you about the stability.  Unfortunately, my 60 year-old back is screaming, "What?  Are you an idiot?  Put that thing down this instant!"  ;D  My arms are still strong enough to lift the saw (or the 100lb Dewalt planer).  My back?  That's another story.

Regards,

Dan.

Saturday I was able to lift the 94 pound planer onto the mobile base. Today my 60 year old knees are still asking me ......why?

Yeah, but remember when you didn't want a domino.

Uh, Yeah, I sort of recall that... Now I know why Bob never gives anyone a sales pitch, he just gets all of you to do it for him. The Kapex is going to be a much tougher sell on me than the Domino was. The Domino is so unique that there's no real alternative to it. With the Kapex, there are several.

Here's a pic of the Kapex taken last Saturday at the Festool booth at a woodworking show in Austria.

In  case you didn't notice, the purchase of this tool provides so much pleasure that even a guy who has just had his arm severed is still smiling.
