Kinda Odd 100

You know Kreg would come out with one that's 2/3-priced, but manufactured so sloppy, it makes biscuits look tight.

You may be right about pricing, but that’s more what the market will bear versus actual manufacturing costs. Cordless drills have a lot of tech in them, yet are essentially free with batteries & charger. That said, the market for even a $400 Domino is a lot smaller than for cordless drills, so there’s a volume aspect to be considered.

I wonder how much YouTube played in the competition for track saws. In the old days, every time Norm pulled out his biscuit joiner, they flew off the shelves (literal shelves in those days) the next day. With so many YTers using dominos today, despite the pricing, I have to think there’s a big enough market there, just like the old biscuit days.

When the patent runs out and the competitors announce their tools to compete, I sincerely doubt that they will be significantly less expensive than Festool's Domino.  It has to be an expensive tool to build.  Engineering and development costs will also need to be addressed. It was commonly anticipated that the track saws of the mainstream competitors would be so much cheaper when they came to market.  At least initially that was not the case.  Since then the Festool price increases have widened the gap.

I would be absolutely amazed if anyone released a Domino clone that was anywhere near the quality of Festool's for any significant price difference.

There are currently a bunch of Zeta clones available around the $450-500AUD mark, and while they're more or less certainly functional, the usability is a far cry from the Zeta.

Triton also did it with the DuoDoweller and failed, they tried to make their own version, that was still pretty expensive and was a garbage machine that was unusable.

I still think at best we'll see one or two crappy clones at a high price that are very agricultural.
