Trying to get a feel for what to use on the Kutzall burr side. Looking to add some texture to a piece. What I am shooting for is a texture like I had pounded a piece of metal with a small ball peen hammer. So a series of small concave indentions.

Any one doing something similar?

[member=6237]deepcreek[/member] Joe are you doing anything like this and what have you had good luck with?

Thanks in advance.

You want to cut dimples to look like it was beaten with a ball peen hammer?  Wouldn’t it be faster and cleaner to simply beat the surface with a ball peen hammer?  No dust to clean up.

Also, if you are staining the surface, it will all be face grain.  If you cut the dimples, it will be a combination of face grain and end grain.  Staining will be a monumental headache.

Other than posing this question, I have no real input on what is the best way to cut the dimples.

Ron - I haven't done a lot of texturing beyond using a carbide ball burr in a Dremel tool.  It worked fine but not always super smooth.

I have a friend who uses an Automach power carver for texturing. He recently switched/upgraded to Foredom which offers a reciprocating chisel carving handpiece in addition to their rotary handpieces.

Hope this helps.
