Laminate trimming with the 1010

Hello people,

First time poster although I have received alot of assistance from these forums which lead to my first Festool purchase earlier this year - a Domino 500 that's impressed me so much I'm back.[big grin]

I work mostly in solid woods but have an upcoming project where I will be doing a fair amount of laminating on particle board (no curves). After thinking through the MFK 700/1010/1400 question I am opting for the 1010 (I have a Dewalt 625 mounted in my router table for larger stuff as well as a smaller Dewalt that doesn't see much use).

I'm planning on getting the 1010 with the angle arm, edging plate and chip deflector so I will be set up for the laminate trimming ahead.

What bit do people recommend for edge trimming? I live in Switzerland so 8mm bits are readily available here. Festool carries a tungsten carbide bit (491028) that has a bottom-located ball bearing and a 19mm cutting diameter that to my eyes looks appropriate. But if people have other bits they'd particularly recommend for this let me know - unlike the MFK with it's 1.5 degree table the 1010 will have me working at 0 degrees so I will need to ensure I'm not fouling the workpiece.

Best,

Dave M

Take a good look at the Amana No-File bit.  I've never worked with a better bit for use with laminates.  It comes with a 1/4" shank, not 8mm, though.  It's available on Amazon, so I'd be very surprised if you couldn't get it there in CH.  This would be considered a finishing bit, not a straight-cut.

I have used flush-trim bits for years, uses a little lube on the bearing surface, make sure it is clean & free of glue and go at a good pace. Do a few trial runs before you get to you final work piece. B

Thanks everyone. Wow those Whitesides are pricey. Still - as the 1010 only takes 8mm or 1/4" bits I'll either go with the Festool bit or the Amana ones Willy mentioned. Interesting profile Willy...although the thickness of the laminate I'll be working with is a mere 0.5 mm so I'm not sure the tiny bit of easing that profile would give me would help or potentially hinder.

Thanks again - very helpful discussions here.

Dave
