Looking really sharp and a nice build.
As far as over complicating the design goes, that's something we are all probably guilty of at one time or another, you can justify this by saying I'm future proofing my design and building above code.

It was probably about the limit of what I could handle at home in my shedshop

It also spent about 3 weeks in my lounge (the wife not happy)

I’ve got about 3 or 4 projects to finish before I start any thing big

There are no plans for a matching bench

but I will definitely be making some more stuff in birch ply
