I really enjoy the latest installer kit, however, as soon as I opened the Systainer, my initial thought was, what was Festool thinking when they created all of this wasted space inside the installer kit?  It's space that's lost, but it could have been easily harvested had they thought about including what a person's needs are, rather than strictly what their marketing/sales needs are. [eek]

Short of having to butcher all of the the pvc inserts, which I was prepared to do, I needed to find additional room for the miscellaneous extra small stuff that a person needs for various difficult installations. Little items such as Vix bits, an automatic center punch, hex driver bits, hex nut drivers, a 1/4" ratchet, extra drill bits...you name it.

Thus, I decided to see if an attic cover would fit on the installer kit given the attic cover's increased interior thickness. I'm happy to say that AFAIC, the attic cover is the best & easiest addition possible for the installer kit. The stock installer kit comes in at the 85% functional level, while the addition of the attic cover raises it now to 95%.

It would still be nice if Festool would consider reworking their insert system  [poke]  because it would yield a lot more space than the attic cover, however the attic cover is a good first step.

That was a disappointment to me too. Wish they would have given the space under both sides of the systainer.

Yes they are though not cheap ($42.56 total):
- Green closure #702081 at $3.71 excl.VAT
- Lid #702082 at $25.16 excl.VAT
- Transparant cover #702083 at $13.78 excl.VAT

Because the attic lid is so expensive, I usually purchase an assembled Systainer with the attic lid installed and swap-out covers and then have an extra Systainer for storage.

Looks good. Easy grade too.  [thumbs up]

There are quite a few tool systainers that attic lids will fit on for added storage space.

I buy systainers with the attic lid from Lee Valley.  Search under Tanos.  They sell Syst IIs for $74.00.  I change out the lids to suit my needs.  I bought one to install on a syst V for my Senco compressor (which by the way fit perfectly by only removing the front rubber shock absorbers, I remove the unit and reinstall for use).  I just bought another to install on one of the new systainer II with a drawer under (NAINA  ;).  I keep my Milwuakee hammerdrill, impact driver, drill bit set, insert driver set, and various other accessories, and four batteries in that.

Are the attic inserts from Tanos not available in NA?
In Aus it seems you can only buy the inserts with drills and drivers already fitted but in Europe you can get the empty inserts and then custom fit them in the attic lid which makes sense as everyone's needs are going to be different. The black inserts were bought pre filled where as the light grey inserts from Europe came empty.

The bit holder inserts are available in the USA from Lee Valley.

I bought the installer's kit somewhat on a whim when I picked up a CXS about a month ago.  I love the kit so far, but had the same complaints about the insert.  I like this idea, and have several uses for empty systainers.  Thanks for the idea.

OK.  I was a little excited about this proposition as I had seen an attic lid systainer at my dealer, however, that was a kit with one of the new drills.  Since the systainer entered North America in a kit, will the attic lid systainers then be availabe for purchase as stand alone items?  Are the Systainers that Lee Valley sells the same coloring as the Festool units (it appears they sell both the anthracite and a light gray version)?  For the $50 or so it would cost to order just the lid through EKAT, I would sooner create a new insert that would be more functional for me (probably the direction I will go anyway).
