So we were wondering, who's left handed? Self explanatory. There might be some money riding on this by now. Something about a tie-in between creative nature  and brain-sided-ness, if you know what I mean. My first attempt at a poll, so hopefully it works.....

Everyone's born right handed, but only the gifted overcome it....

Take a  look at your tape measure and tell me it wasn't designed by a lefty..... pull it out with your right hand, pencil in your left.... otherwise, pull it out with your left hand and read it upside down.... think about it.....

My dad did teach me to shoot & play the guitar right handed.... left handed rifles & guitars are harder to find and more expensive.... And try finding a left-handed 5-string banjo....

A friend of mine has a custom Gibson left handed banjo that he made 40 or 50 years ago when Gibson was still in Kalamzoo, MI

Looks like we need a finer distinction in the ambidextrous category. I chose ambi since I only write and draw (and occasionally hammer etc.) left handed. Most everything else is from the right hand so I'm not sure if I should have chosen left instead.

Hi Fred,

Do you play? I do Clawhammer banjo. My three vintage Vega banjos range from 1913 to 1929, all are right handed, as were most all back then. It would have to be a custom or special order like your friends.

Gary

I am right handed but over the years I have learned to do about 50% of technical manipulations also with my left hand. But when it counts, with precise control of the fingers, it is surely right hand operation only.

Still left-handed despite the best efforts of the Ursuline nuns.  :)  The Fastcap lefty-righty tape measure is a gem. And the Domino is a lefty's dream, with the dust collector on the right side.  ;D ;D

Gary,

I used to attempt to play guitar, but haven't touched it in years.  In fact the neck broke on my Ovation Legend just above the nut so now its only good for a planter.  I'm thinking about trying to glue it with Gorilla glue to see if it will hold.

Fred

Ambidextrous, kinda...

I write slowly with my left hand, but I draw with my left, and the only reason I write with my right hand is that I broke my left arm in my younger years. I used to write whichever direction I picked up a pen with, and my teacher would show me pages that I'd written both ways and ask me which one was right and I couldn't tell the difference.

Fred,

PLEASE..... don't even give another thought to using Gorilla Glue on that neck !!! If you have access to the July/August issue of Fine Woodworking, check out the article on testing wood glues.
http://www.taunton.com/finewoodworking/Materials/MaterialsArticle.aspx?id=28853

To make a long story short, Gorilla Glue came in last, rating only 58% as strong as PVA glue. Hide glue was even stronger than Gorilla Glue.

Although Hot Hide Glue was the traditional glue for luthiery, Titebond or Elmers is widely used today. I convert vintage 4-string banjos to 5-string by steaming the hide glue joint between neck and dowel (sometimes called a "perch pole") and glue on the reproduction neck with Elmers. If the break is along the grain, and not a clean cross-grain break where the nut was rabbeted in, you should soon be playing just as good as before....

And, yes, I remember Sister Monica rapping my knuckles with a ruler for writing with my left (the devil's) hand.... Was more a matter of practicality back then... when fountain pens were the norm and lefties dragged their hand through the wet ink.... Could always tell a leftie by the ink smears on the back of his hand.

Gary

You can still tell a lefty by the ink smears. That's why I write with a laptop.

I don't know about left-handed laptops, but I type with only one hand..... I'm half Italian and have to use my hands when I talk.. Type with my right while waving my left... Tried typing with my toes so I'd have both hands free, but couldn't see the keys well enough..... ;D Honest....

My maternal grandparents came from Acquaviva Collecroce in the province of Campobasso.... odly, the inhabitants there speak Croatian, not Italian... maybe that's why I'm left handed? ::)

I trackpad with my right? Type with my left. Thinking about maybe getting a trackball though (vs. stylus/mouse and pad) when I set up the Desktop.

I am left-handed.

When it comes to woodworking and general carpentry, it's a big pain in the ass!!  Most power tools (especially circular saws) are made for right-handed people.  Luckily, Porter Cable makes a "left-blade" framing saw with a dust port that lets me direct the chips away from my face.  Too bad it's not a worm-drive, though!

I also spent big bucks on a heavy-duty tool belt made specifically for left-handed carpenters (Occidental Leather).  Really great belt with the pouches "reversed" for a lefty, but the belts a bit too heavy.  Should have gotten the lighter nylon bags.  I also really hate "trigger locks" on a lot of power tools, as they generally dig into your hand when using the tool with your left hand.

Having said all of this, I've never had any problem using any of my Festools with my left hand.  They feel great (especially the sanders) in either hand.  Because of the guide rail on the TS55, I can use with either hand comfortably and don't have to worry much because the guide rail keeps things nice and straight with a minimal amount of hand-to-eye coordination on my part.

I'm a lefty despite school my teachers whacking my left hand with a wooden ruler until third grade.  Then they gave up.  I bowl left, golf right, bat right [more power] or left [fewer strikeouts], pitch left, but can throw decently right, write left but can print OK right, and use power tools as best I can.  I do find problems with some due to placement of their switches and lock-on buttons, including some Festool products.  But most of the time, being a lefty is not a problem.
