Lent out my TSC55 and now this...

Amazon has it by the gallon.  But yes, finding cleaners in store lately is hit or miss, mostly miss.  I’ve been using industrial supply places like Zoro when other avenues fail.

my point was , nobody carries that as a stock item.

Pandemic or no pandemic.

LATA is stocked lots of places and is actually in stock at lots that I frequent.  Inexpensive, available today, and I don't have to worry if I get the right variant like with SG.

Of course I know this crowd loves to seek out the unusual so SG- HD certainly fits that bill.

All power to this forum!

For some reason I had never come across blade cleaning. After reading this a couple of days ago I ordered a bottle of Trend tool cleaner off Amazon. Wow. two hours later all my saw blades and router bits have been transformed. A couple of router bits have been ditched - now that I can see their true state! A quick test cut with my Kapex and I can see the difference immediately.

Thanks!

It's one of those obvious things that you feel stupid for not knowing, but unless someone tells you... Luckily I have known about blade cleaning for a long time now, but I've heard some funny stories about the amount of money people have spent over the years sending blades to be sharpened that only really needed a clean, or worse throwing away and buying new. You live you learn.

[member=67935]xedos[/member] That’s actually untrue.  I’ve seen that SG version in my home improvement stores.  Whether the websites reflected that, I don’t know, but it caught my eye because I haven’t seen that version in stores before and I wondered if they strayed from their original branding (and maybe it was the same product I was accustomed to buying?).  Anyway, with the pandemic, you’re unlikely to find it on the shelf.

Your alternative is good.  It gives people a choice.  Everybody is free to make their own decisions, we’re just sharing information.  For my own part, I go out every 2 weeks to get groceries.  Without fail, store shelves reflect supply issues that are present at every retailer.  Even the larger chains pull product from online ordering and direct people to the store for “limited supply”.  The cleaning aisles in the 2 stores I frequent are largely bare and have been since late Feb.  If I needed a product like this right now, I wouldn’t feel confident or comfortable searching any brick and mortar looking for it.

But long after this pandemic leaves us, someone will be searching on these forums, will find your suggestion, walk down the block and pay the $1 (or whatever) and be thrilled they saved a bunch of money and have clean bits and blades.  So there is lasting value in every option presented in this thread.

I used the trend cleaner when I lived in the UK. It really is good stuff. Best I've used. Here in the states I use Krud Cutter. Not made for cleaning pitch in particular but it does a good job and is a good all around cleaner

The Trend stuff claims to also be a lubricant. Not sure is CMT 2050 claims that but both say that leaving the residual goo on the tool inhibits rust.

I have been using Felder's resin remover (article number 10.0.022) for years and have never seen any detrimental effect on my blades. It is available through their webshop.

...He tried to rip some 40-50mm English oak with the 48T blade and told me the saw was struggling and the batteries were dying very fast. Blade returned looking like a cooked marshmallow :'( Is this salvageable in your opinion?

If you'd have loaned it instead of lent it, you could have gone all American Rambo on them. :)

Using Ballistol Harzlöser here:

Works nicely and I don't need much to clean a blade. Plus according to the MSDS is a bit less harsh on the human body than other stuff.
Spray on the blade, wait a while for the universe to do what it does... in case it has been a long time since the last cleaning a quick mechanical treatment with a stiff brush, then the blade is ready to be wiped clean with a rag and to get a coat with their normal Oil.

Regarding lending tools: simple solution is to ask for collateral (list price does the trick) and in case of a problem you simply compliment the one who messed it up on buying it - then simply order yourself a NIB one. Win-win.
