Let us all ban +1

I respect the concept of support for a position but would prefer content for actual posts. Reiterating my earlier postition I think an "I agree" or "like" etc. button would provide the ability to support a previous post without cluttering the unread post lists with simply that.

Having said that, it's not the end of the world so if +1 is what you like then by all means go ahead and +1

I'd rather scroll through 10 "+1" posts than a long thread where the primary participant has a page long list of their Festools in their sig!

That gets old real fast [sad]

+ 3

+4
Yep, I totally agree!!!  I interpret the long sig line tool lists as school boy bragging or gloating.  At minimum, it shows a certain level of immaturity.  The long sig lines are a total waste of my time, bandwidth, and time (again) to scroll past some of the sig lines just to read the next post in a topic.  While I'm fairly certain many of us can purchase every Festool sold and add it to our "collection" sig lines, some people can't, which leads me right back to the school boy bully syndrome.....

Rather than ban +1, I definitely would vote for ban sig lines with tool lists!!!

First let me say that I agree with virtually all the posts regarding the signature lists etc.

The original question involves banning the use of +1 for posts (if such a thing were even possible), not "and further I don't like what people put in their signature lines".  The diference for me is my damn adult ADD draws me to every bloody unread post that hits my inbox and it's kinda a let down to open it to see simply +1, at which point I really don't care what is in the sig line as I just scroll by them.

I've grown to accept that my limited attention span is my issue so while I would prefer you all post in the maner that serves me best I recognise that this is not going to happen so I will happily open up a dozen +1 posts in order to share in some of the great ideas and projects that many of you come up with.

Well the old saying fits here I think. Opinions are like ________ , everyone has one".

I personally don't care about the +1. I don't even acknowledge it really. I also don't care about the long signature line. Heck, I list my tools on it because I am proud that I CAN afford them AND use them. I know there are a bunch of people on this forum that do collect tools and rarely use them...  What's wrong with that?!?!  I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Heck, there are a lot worse things to collect like tiny porcelain clowns. [shiver]

Even if you did collect tiny porcelain clowns, there is probably a forum out there for it (maybe I will start TPCOG.com) and people go there to learn all they can about them, be it professional or just hobbyist.

I joined this forum to learn and share, and to be part of an area that will better my woodworking skills, better my tool "collection" and meet other folks with similar interests.

Usually I keep my mouth shut but this is getting ridiculous...  There is no way to enforce a ban on +1. If a signature line that is 30 rows deep annoys you, then scroll faster. If you don't like that a person has more tools than you and "flaunts" it in their signature line, get over it because it is human nature to be proud of their possessions.

No offense to the OP about the request, but it is impossible to ban it. If Shane did make it possible, people will come up with something else and that will annoy some percentage of members here.

By the way, I use my phone a LOT for this forum and use Tapatalk and by default, it doesn't show the signature lines.

I too am not a big fan of the +1 but I do understand why they are used. If we could have a function similar to the "like" function on facebook that would flag the poster and the OP that someone supported their post without it hitting all our unread lists I think that would provide the function of the +1 without sending all of us to look at a new post only to see a +1. We could even call it the +1 function and each post could have a little tally in the corner of how many if any have +1'd it.

And to Peter's point the new +1 function would not be included in a person's post count.

Kevin

I do like your idea, kinda like how youtube does the "thumbs up" "thumbs down" it doesn't have to place the most thumbed up post at the beginning of the thread. I also think it would encourage the non-posters "lurkers" to chime in even if it not be written, but at least in agreement and who knows maybe if they get used to clicking a "thumbs up/like/smiley face" or whatever, it might just get them to post on the forum as well.  Untidy since it's your thread.. what do you thing?

I'd love to be able to filter out certain elements for customised viewing. Sigs would be the first thing I turned off. An "agreed with" list for a post would also be useful ... Shows as a counter and opens as a list of members ...

To be clear ... I don't care if people list their tools in their sig ... It's listing them sequentially down the page that irritates.

Thank you again to all who have responded and generated discussion on this subject. I thought it would have died down back around #20 and if not, certainly by  around #32 when discussion of Signatures had reached some conclusions.

From time to time most of us see ways the FOG may improve. It is just such a great and active resource. My whole point by being blunt/outrageous suggesting a Ban was to generate discussion around something that was irritating me.
[size=18pt]
Who am I to really think that +1 could actually be banned!  [eek]
[size=14pt]
So now we know, the majority of respondents like +1. But as I stated in #20, can we at least think a bit before we slap down a +1. Do we really need a procession of them or a dormant post revived with just +1?
[size=10pt]
Some mentioned that +1 provided a convenient way to respond on a mobile whilst driving. Hardly a great argument for it, given the issue of safety and that in some countries using a mobile whilst driving is a significant offence. I agree with Wencye, Woodn't it be Neat and others who have suggested 'like buttons'. They would not bump post numbers, and would provide data and promote input from lurkers. Over to you Peter, Shane and Seth to consider this option further.

As to lists of Festools in Signatures, it is your business. It really is your signature. However beyond tools, remember this is an intra and international forum. In addition to the points I previously made perhaps consider using a tool list to illustrate their use in a project thread. And Kev makes a good point around vertical and horizontal lists (and switchable options too.).

However, I would like to see more humour or other information about a member in their Signature. Although at times I find JMBFestools sliding smilies a distraction from what he is saying, I certainly appreciate his effort to be creative and different.  [smile]

Thank you Peter for your moderation and input.  [smile]

That is completely annoying.

I don't mind the +1 . It's just saying I agree .and sometimes it's good if a few guys agree without the need for another long post to reiterate a point

Also I quite like the tool lists in the signature .I'm interested in what combinations of tools other guys have bought .and it doesn't make me jealous or annoyed
I choose not to put my list on my signature but that's my choice

It's all good  [big grin]

I prefer the +1. If someone disagree's enough to comment on a post, I'll read it.

Alot of +1's reinforces the post and tells me it has merit. If it's a technique or a purchase, it can definitely sway me towards it.

Other forums have a 'Like' button and, uh, I like that better. No need to scroll through +1s or "yeah me, too" or (waaaay worse) a post quoting a two-screen post and only adding "yes i agree". ?!?  Also easier to see how many agree very quickly.  I don't like forums that then float the most liked comments to the top of the thread because you lose context.

And as someone else pointed out, lurkers possibly conscious of their English ability would be more apt to hit 'Like'.

If someone implements a 'Like' on here, keep the 'Like count' out of the profiles... on that other forum, people who originally posted a lot for the sake of having that 'Post Count' show a big number went nuts when 'Like' was implemented to the point of having a stupid thread where any reply would get a like from all participants in the thread.  Yeah, a 'like' pyramid scheme :-/

This is exactly how I feel about it as well. Can't remember how many times I've seen a string of " +1's " and been driven to go study up on or purchase something?
