leveling and smoothing a slab

Hey All,
Recently picked up a large slab of redwood for an office desk project. Looking for tips/tricks for making a sled for a planer to get the thing flat before I start scraping/sanding. The only time I've done this sort of thing was for large mantles out of half logs or slabs. This is a bit bigger and as a table will need to be quite flat. Maybe theres a better way than the planer, just a jumping off point. Thanks
