Hi All - i have searched but cannot find any discussions on the use of the Lex line for automotive

In particular, for people who have used it to take off paint from metal and fiberglass and grind down/feather for repairs, how is it? - how does it compare to more traditional da sanders like Mirka, rupes, ir, 3m?

thanks!

I've talked to people who've demo'd it at shops. Not a lot of feedback from anyone other than nice sander, not cheap, runs well. Air consumption seemed average for the type and class of pneumatic sander. But, what sanders were they comparing it to, don't have a clue ... [embarassed]
So, I don't have much to add unfortunately ... [sad]

In the 8 years I've been here on the FOG, the Lex sanders have been discussed only a handfull of times. Not a big seller.

. Here in the US, I have heard that Festool's Paint Division will try to sell more of them as well as the EC Electric ETS Sander version in Automotive Shops.

in digging around, it looks like their strategy in the automobile market is a partnership w 3M - festool hardware, 3m abrassives...could be interesting - some joint selling can be found on 3m's website

It's a smart move to partner up with 3M, it is one of the leading suppliers from the automotive sector and that will surely get the tools noticed by the professionals.

In the body shop I always tried to avoid the air sanders, not that they're bad or anything, but they use up air and when there's a lot going on pressure could drop dramatically. We had a very big compressor in the shop, but more than once did I start sanding to have an annoyed guy come out of the spray booth asking who's using up his pressure.

I think the evolution to the new brushless EC sanders might become much more popular.

3M and Festool Announce Strategic Collaboration to Serve Automotive Collision Repair Industry

I thought this was a real good omen when I ran across the announcement about 3-4 months ago. 3M certainly doesn't rest on their laurels and I'm sure there will be some push push by 3M  [poke]  Festool when they identify a need in the automotive market and that need encompasses a new tool or two.
This is supposed to roll out within the next couple of months.
