*HAND TOOL EVENTS*

January 8th and 9th, 2010: *Fine Lumber, Austin, TX*
We?re excited about working with Fine Lumber in Austin! They?re located in the northern end of the Austin metro area, and offer a variety of domestic and exotic lumber. A family-owned lumberyard, they?ve been serving the Austin area for over 20 years.

Since currently in Texas,  I'm going to try to go to this.  Is anyone else planning to go?

I'd like to go to this, Wayne.

When did you start hanging out in Texas? Fort Stockton is a long way from anywhere, except Marathon...

Tom,

I've been here since the end of September.  My home and shop are still back in Akron, Oh though.  I'm living in Hotels setting up dialysis centers in small rural towns. the original plan was to move out here somewhere but after a few months in Fort Stockton, I'm having second thoughts.  I'm not sure where my next stop is, maybe Dumas or maybe Brownfield near Lubbock.  So far Midland seems pretty nice.

I've been wanting to come out your way and check things out.  Just a matter of taking some time off.  Also I'm trying to decide if the show in Austin is worth going both days or if Saturday alone is enough time.  I've never been to a lie-neilson show.  I will be spending time with them as well as Bridge city.  Wondering if Bridge City will have the JMPv2 there to see.

I just got an email from BCTW that they will be showing the JMPv2 at the Austin show.

I've been to the Lie-Nielsen tool shows in Chicago and found them very worthwhile.  Based on my experience I think you can see what you will want to see in a day.  Not sure if Jameel from Benchcrafted will be at that show or not, or Ron Breese with Breese planes.  But if they are, it's an added bonus.

Niel,

I would be nice to see the bench Crafted benches and hardware up close.  I think I'm going to drive to Austin on Friday afternoon and go to the show on Saturday.

Tom,

If your their on Saturday, look me up.  You should recognize me from my profile pic.

We lived in Marfa for a few years when I was a small boy, my sister was born there in 1944.

When I have seen the Lie guys at shows in the past they pretty much had a couple of benches and at least one of each of the tools for people to try out....plus their expert advise on which tool you needed and how to best use them.  There were not tools to buy but you could order and they would ship out of Maine...

Enjoy the time...

Best,
Todd

Todd,

I will be nice to get out of Dodge for a bit!  And since I'm living in Hotels currently, If I do get anything, I'd order and ship back home anyway.  Besides, If left alone in the hotel with a handplane and no wood, might be bad for the furniture in here!  [laughing]

Wayne:

If you've never been here, you're in for a pleasant surprise. Austin and West TX are completely different. Also, it's a loonngg way from Ft. Stockton to Austin. I've gone out to Big Bend (a couple of hours south of Ft. Stockton) many times. I usually start the trip in late evening and finish it in very early morning. Between Junction and Ft. Stockton, there's nothin'. That means that the Highway Patrol go home after about 11:00 and I can go as fast as the vehicle will go for that stretch. It really shortens that long ride. It also reminds me of the Autobahn, only on another planet...

I'll make a point to be there on Saturday. Why don't you give me a call when you're in town? 512-428-9140 rings me wherever I am.

Tom,

I twas nice meeting you in Austin!  I didn't see this post until now two days after the show.

For all who didn't go, I had a great time playing with all the hand planes made by leigh nielsen.  Angie was especially helpful and patient while teaching me a ton about hand planes.  I also got to meet John From Bridge City.  I tried an assortment of BC  planes and also played with the JMPv2.  It was set up in the unheated steel buliding where  fine lumber stores their wood.  And it was the coldest day ever recorded in Austin!  They set up a torpedo and a few propane space heaters in the tool area to cut the chill.

It was miserably cold in the morning and I was discouraged at first.  But after I started playing, I just alternated between the tools and warming up under a heater.  I didn't figure I'd say too long but time flies when your having fun!  Next thing I know it's 8 hours later and I'm still playing and refining my wish list.

All in all it was a great time and great learning experience.  When Lie Nielsen comes near your area, I'd recommend going.  Everyone there was gracious and very helpful.  And special thanks to Angie and John Economaki!!!
