Lie Nielsen Honing Guide

I splurged and bought a bunch of LN chisels, water stones and the honing guide. I built an angle setting jig per the LN specs.

Everything works great with the guide, the angle setting jig, and the bench chisels.

The mortise chisels required a different set of jaws than did the bench chisels.

The angle setting guide results are totally off for the mortise chisels. The guide jaws don't really grip the mortise chisels firmly.

Any wisdom out there?

So, you are using the Mortise Chisel Jaws and they don't grip the chisels firmly? I don't have this honing guide, so cannot offer advice on that aspect. However, as to the angle setting guide, you only need to mount the chisel into the guide and use a protractor to check the angle, adjust the chisel in the guide as needed until you get the desired angle, then with the chisel still in the guide make your angle stop for that angle. Continue for each angle you want on your guide.

Thanks. I put the chisel in the honing guide, adjusted the angle until the bevel was flush with the surface, and then positioned the stop. Retried the setup and found the angle was off.

The chisel wasn’t seated perfectly thus throwing off the angle. Retried again making sure the chisel was perfectly seated and got better results.

The jaws for the bench chisels work so well every time that I’m somewhat stunned the mortise chisel jaws are so difficult.

I plan to call WP today.

I went back to Highland Woodworking this AM. We tried a different set of mortise jaws in the honing guide.

Problem solved! The new guides "snick" into place and provide a good solid grip on the chisel.

There are two locator pins on each the jaws that fit into two holes on the guide's body. The pins on the original saws were too long so the jaws didn't seat flush with the guide body. When I tightened the guide's jaws, they canted and lost contact with the chisel's sides.
