Loaned tool predicament

Well yeah, I had a 'very good' teacher, who bore a striking resemblance to this one:

Since one can't escape loaning out tools completely, I've taken a page from Sheldon's Roomate Agreement on the 'Big Bang Theory' show and drafted my own Loaner Agreement where paragraph 27, section 3 clearly stipulates that "borrower must post a paypal deposit in the amount of "cost of tool plus 20%" before absconding with said loaner".  In addition the addendum on page 345 indicates that all persons filling out the "Friend Application" must prove that they have an arsenal of tools that are of equal or better quality than me and be willing to lend them out in order for their 'friend status' to remain active.

No need to get upset; just clear rules put down in writing ahead of time.  That may explain why I don't have too many friends and am instead relegated to spending time online with complete strangers who just happen to own the same router brand that I do...

Loaned my neighbor a hand cart.  He left it out in the g-d rain.  Great, yet another eff'ing thing added to my to do list... repaint it because someone else was too lazy to take care of something.

I used the gun the last month to spray all the crown and baseboard that I installed in our house and plan on using it for some other paint projects in the future. 

I was going to ask about that in your other post about appropriate crown to use.
They look really good BTW.
I have a set of "lender" tools that neighbors use.

Whenever my brothers (or any family member) borrow something I consider it a donation. I own a pressure washer I haven't seen in 3 years, not holding out much hope to get my Milwaukee roto hammer or Bosch 7" grinder back from another brother. Family---gotta luv 'em.

My neighbor is always trying to lend me his tools, he has figured out he gets them back in better shape than he lent them.

I don't loan out tools to anyone except my brother who is very particular (and has several Festools). I will offer to help just about anyone, but I won't let them touch my Festool or Mafell tools unsupervised.

Second that. I'll help willingly but i'm the one to hold the trigger. Gave me some food for thought when my neighbour asked me to borrow my plane ' to strip paint off ' some old nightstand.. [eek]

I am in the "talk to him camp". I know it might seem that you are griping about a $65.00 item but you are really just wanting to get your item back in the same condition you lent it out as... That is the opposite of griping!

If they act smug or feel that they don't owe you anything, they are not your friends. And if they act that way, they are petty and you shouldn't be their friend either.

By nature, I am one to rub against the grain and question things so I have no issue saying talk to them... But if you are timid about it, don't bother. In that situation you are probably damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I agree with talking to them about it. If they had apologized about it when it was returned I would let it go, but since they didn't, they either don't care or they thought you wouldn't notice.
