What sort of locks do you guy use on ext doors and hinges etc. Just seems to me that people are spending a reasonable amount of money on a door then ruin it by buying cheap rubbish to put on it and the cheapest lock they can find.

Me and jmb were looking at some front doors the other day and they must have had £1000 of ironmongery per door, looked very good

If you want the best then Banham but as far as I know you have to have them fit it. We did a job the other year in Clabon mews near Knightsbridge and they had a specialist firm fit the front door, I reckon you would have had to use a tank to get through it  [laughing]. It was armour plated and when you turned the key about 20 stainless steel 1 inch bolts shot out to secure it  :o.

On a lot of our jobs we have all the ironmongery supplied by decent firms so in general its very good quality but I know what you mean some people just don't spend the money I hate fitting poor quality stuff you just know its gonna break.

Well, considering it's an ironmongery, examples of it being put to use in case of theft are most appropriate.

GOD!! [scared] [big grin]

Have you had a look at ABLOY locks?

They are considered pretty much the best you can buy here and it doesn't hurt that its a Finnish company to boot  [cool]

I've bumped once into a hilarious situation in my previous daytime job where the locking system of a building was top notch with metal doors, door frame prongs and all the other trims to conform to military grade physical security specs and the end result of a break in was that the whole door frame was ripped out of the building when the thief tried to pull the door open with a car [eek]. Not a scratch on the door or lock - nicely still closed and in the door frame... just lying on the ground a few feet away from the wall it was supposed to be in... Next time I'll make sure the building contractor actually reinforces the darn wall surrounding the door frame too! [doh]

yeah i have seen the abloy locks. i work in loads of schools and they all have assa abloy locks

I see the same thing here,.... a lot. $1M home with something not much better than this on the front door.

It kills me!

At the builders show in Paris last year they had a stand with Chinese steel doors with 20 sliding bolts as described above, but as the whole door with locks could be yours for 150 euros you can imagine the quality!

Suprised with such big opinions on the forum there isnt more input on here. I also just realised i put this in the wrong section. silly me.

I would like to have a door lock like  Audi and other car manufactures have  Keyless entry!    No need to even let go of your shopping bags just walk up to the door and it opens up for you! with a motion sensor and your key vob in your pocket to unlock the system wirelessly.

JMB

This wasn't cheap Chinese rubbish it was probably a few grand, really well made. They spent about £2 million on this little mews house it had a lift and basement cinema and bar.

I considered putting a keyless push button locking system on my apartment door, but without a doubt, I know that half the people walking by the door will be tempted to test it out.

[laughing] [laughing] There is a video on You Tube some where where a guy picks a lock like that with a .......... BANANA!!!!  [doh]  His point was the same as yours Harry.

In the UK I would look at Mul-T-Lock
http://www.mul-t-lock.com/res/English_Product_files/Multi_Point_Locks_and_Accessories/Multi-Point%20Locks/m8.pdf

Their cylinders are the high security ones with the keys that have the holes drilled to different depths

I had a door made by multisecure (http://www.lsmultisecure.co.uk/) which had the mul-t-lock multi point locking system and a steel frame, was bomb proof, was for a flat in Bermondsey London which has some pretty rough parts, thives tried to kick the door down, no luck, then they had the brains at least to try and go through a communal partition to get in as often these convereted warehouse type places have the falt divided by studwork and a couple of layers of plasterboard for fire regs (shame for them I had covered the walls in 3mm  sheet steel under the plasterboard!)

For a secure door though, pays to do some research as these multi point locking system require a fair amount of material removed from the door panel, so need to be sure not to compromise the integrity
