Lowboard with glas boxing

This is me latest project I finally finished after some longer pause due to sickness. It is a low board for our living room, my wife wanted something to hide the stereo, PS3 etc. (all that men stuff  [cool])

I used birch for the body and drawers. The drawer slides and the lid hardware are from Hettich (Quaddro and Aquila).
I added glas plates, which were painted on the backside, on the outside to get that extrem high gloss.

The glas was painted using a 2-C PUR-paint with special glas hardener. I used a spray gun to apply the paint. The same paint was used to spray the wood, using the regular hardener.
The drawers were painted after using an epoxy sealer, for heavy duty use  [big grin]

It's not more complicate, needs maybe a little more preparing, but is quite fast.

Only on the first coat, see picture #5. And only very slightly with P600 (dry). No sanding on the glas  [thumbs up]

Very nice.

Couple of questions.  So you painted the back of the glass and the glass is attached to the top, drawer faces and sides, right?  How do you attach the glass to the boxes?

Also, what is that piece of hardware in the 2nd picture?

Thanks,

Kevin J

Looks great! Not sure what's wrong with seeing a bunch of cool looking boxes with blinking lights etc.  [big grin] but this is also cool looking. I really like the glass fronts.

Just curious why you used the Hettich Aquila vs. a Blum Aventos or similar style door lift system. Seems is would make it easier to access the components etc a little easier than reaching over the door.

@Kevin:
The glue I used is a white PUR glue and it is applied with a press gun, see picture below. The advantage is, that you still can move the glas into the right position in the first 5min.

I guess, the piece of hardware you mean (below the router) is the door hardware. It is a Aquila from Hettich which uses steel cables to hold the door.

@Tim:
I kinda liked the mechanism of the door handle using steel cables. I think it looks quite elegant. Also accessing the the inside may not be so easy as with a lift system, but to be honest I really haven"t thought about it. The door stays closed most of the time. I installed a IR-remote control extension inside, so the signals of the remote controls are transmitted inside the cabinet.

Hi Really nice Cabernet.
I was wondering about the weight of the glass and its thickness, Hardened or "normal" glass?
Could you tell me what you used.
Like the simplistic surface. Did I understand correctly you sprayed the glass yourself?
So you could do any pattern or colours on one sheet of glass.? Like mirror painting.

Pip

Well, the weight is really no issue, MDF cabinets are probably even heavier.

The glass is 5mm thick and hardened, so it can handle a bang from the vac.

The mix with colors will probably work, however for having dark backgrounds a foil might be better.

Thanks I like the idea with the foils, one could get text plotted or photos printed,
Could be fun experimenting.
