LR-32 5MM router bit Screw Size Question?

Hi Guys,

I’ve got a LR-32 question. I’m currently building some upper (garage) cabinets. I’m using the Festool LR-32 System, along with my OF-1010. I’ve chosen the Blum 110° Soft-Close BLUMotion Clip Top Overlay Hinges for Frameless Cabinet (sold by Rockler Item # 32894). The ply is ¾ inch.[attachimg=1]

Here is my problem. I’m using the Festool 491066 5mm Dowel Drill Brad Point Router Bit that is included in the LR-32 system. I know the spear point one is in the pictures, I didn’t want to dismount it and chose its similar sized brother to verify hole diameter. Here’s the problem:  but the holes are too large for the (included) screws to attach the hinge plates.

Am I missing something? I’ve already purchased my hinges, and it’s been long enough (master procrastinator) that I’m sure returning them isn’t an option. Is there a larger diameter screw that I can use with the LR 32 system? What is the ‘right’ way to handle this? The easy way would be to just use a self-centering drill bit, but I really want to use the LR-32 (and benefit from its inherent accuracy).

Any advice or guidance will be greatly welcomed.

Best regards,
JC

Here's one source but they are available from a lot of different places:

FYI, the hardware is made either for the #6 screws or the system screws. You'll need to replace those plates with the ones that accommodate 5mm screws.

For the door use a vix type bit for the screw holes where the hinge attaches to the door: insert the hinge into the 35mm hole, drill the holes with the self centering bit while insuring the hinge is square with the edge of the door. *The doors use either #6 screws or 8MM dowel holes, not system screws.

Use a 5mm screw or there are plastic insert that goes in the 5mm holes you drilled and use the screws you have
I'm not sure if those plastic insert are sold by themselves
I know it comes with the hinges already installed

Euro screws:  http://www.rockler.com/flat-head-pozi-drive-euro-screws

BTW, You can always just free mount the hinges without using the LR32.  Usually in the hinge kit there is a paper template to help you position it off the edge, and then you can, as already suggested, use a vix bit for doing the holes.  Snappy has a Centrotec version of the vix bit, if that matters.  You might also be able to drill out the existing hardware to accommodate the 5mm Euro screws.

Guys,

Thanks for all the awesome advice. I think I have a better idea of what I'm facing and a plan to move forward now. I was super disconcerted when I realized that the screws that were included were basically useless.

The Blum European screws look like they will be the right option, and if not then maybe the plates with the included nylon inserts.

Thanks again for all the help!

Thanks guys. As usual, the FOG is the best place to go for answers and advice. I appreciate all the assistance.

Obviously I'm not the first to struggle with this. I feel fortunate to have a resource like this to help rectify my problem!

Beaudreaux,

IIRC, the Euro screws won't go through the holes in your mounting plates(just checked my hinge box, I did remember right). There's a different part# for the plate that takes the Euro screws.

The cam mounting plate for the Euro screws is Blum part # 173H9100, the plate with the Expando dowels is 174H100E. The cam plates are adjustable vertically like the Rockler plates you have. The link for these at the same vendor posted above: http://mcfaddensdirect.mcfaddens.com/p-1112-blum-174h7100e-cruciform-cam-mounting-plate-spacing-0mm-height-85-2mm-expando.aspx  or you can probably find a local Blum distributor.

I get my Blum stuff from HGH Hardware Supply, they have a lot of locations and I believe they'll ship as well: http://www.hghhardware.com/product.jsp?part=27911&m=1&process=search&ID=,Blum,Blum.Hinges.Plates,Blum.hinge.plates,All.Blum.hinge.plates Use the 800 number, you might get a better price than on the web.

HTH,
Bill

P.S. I thought all this Euro stuff was to make things simple?

In my opinion you want to use these "Blum Frameless System Screw, Clip Mounting Plates".
They come with the euro screws already started in the plate. These screw right into the holes you drill with the  LR32 setup.
