Mafell DD40 G and P models ... there's two ??

I never realised there were two machines, not just one.

The "G" with 700 watts and a range of 3 to 12 mm holes .. up to 37mm deep.

The "P" with 1000 watts and a range from 5 to 16 mm holes .. up to 40mm deep.

What strange thinking made them decide that you can't drill a 3mm hole if you buy the "P" ??

No doubt there's stories out there like "the 1000 watt motor is too powerful for the 3mm bit", etc ... but really .. you'd have to buy two machines to cover the entire DD40 dowel drilling spectrum [eek]

... and someone's going to rush in and say Domino 500 and 700 ...  [wink] ... but still, these DD40 "G" and "P" machines  appear identical, there's a lot of size difference in the Dominos.

Cost is one reason and I seem to recall that one was a little slower RPM so maybe helps prevent heat build up in the holes? Not sure 100% - I know in NA they only sell the 1,000 Watt machine.

Both have the same 8mm cutter bore and will take any cutter.
They are single speed machines, 1000W model is low rpm, 700W model is high rpm. Small diameter bit * low rpm = low cutting speed.
They provide range of cutters to match the rpm. That's all.

PS. If you don't like it get yourself that ultimate doweling jig that you are so fond of and stop complaining  [big grin].

Funny .. seems it's really important to think about the size you'll be using most and if it's

If I was doing sheet goods and 6 or 8 mm then the smaller one. If I was not too sure then maybe the big one and just go a bit slower on the plunge... Or the small one jam it. It is better to go slower so that the wood does not get burnt... if you want glue to stick in the holes.

Their BST drill station looks like it works for big deep holes.

So I guess the big one, doing both, makes sense.
But get a grip... It is not like you need both.
You do need that castellated rail if you are doing lots of shelf pins. Which infers the smaller 700 watt and shelf goods.

I dunno... You p'rolly need that domino700 I have in the classifieds.

A "G" here or there doesn't freak me, I just don't want another multi G investment ... The physical space is causing me immense issues as it is.

Back on a serious note, the small and large domino covers a lot of range.
The zeta and the DD40 cover a lot of range for sheet goods, and to some extent the DD40 covers larger solid wood.

The decisions get tough at the top of the range.
