Mafell MT55 18M BL and new KSS50 18M

Morning everyone,

I came across these new machines on Mafell's UK Instagram account. Looks pretty promising! A cordless MT55c track saw and updated KSS 50 circular saw.

The MT55 is a interesting machine in that is is a Mafell design, manufactured by Bosch with battery technology from Metabo. I noticed it runs on only 1 battery vs two for the TSC55.My guess would be this is because the Mafell runs on the new Metabo LiHD battery's with 20700 cells? The also newly announced 3.5Ah and 7.Ah Metabo LiHD battery's are said to have the new 20700 cells.
 
thanks so much for these links,but one correction,mafell manufacture all their own tools and fully in Germany,bosch only have a licence(from mafell) to manufacture an inferior version of the mafell mt55,again many thanks for posting.

Cool thanks for setting that straight. However I am pretty sure the drills and batteries are manufactured by Metabo. The 18v drills are made in Germany, but the LiHD batteries in Hungary and the 10,8v drill in China.
 
Drills are reprogrammed in house by Mafell with different torque curve. Rest seems to be cosmetics, a better belt clip on Mafell.  And something else - the Metabo equivalent (original) drills make a "beepy" sound when driving screws and Mafell are silent. How they accomplish that I have no idea. I have had both Metabo (BS 18 LTX Quick) and Mafell (A18m bl) at the same time - and they feel the same but sound different. I sold my Metabo though it is still an excellent drill.

Batteries and Chargers are Metabo. Mafell will get the LiHD batteries shipping with their new saws from now on.

Ha, funny you should say that about the squeaking. I did notice the same on all of my Metabo drills.

They are excellent drills in my opinion though and they have the added bonus that the centrotec fits on them. Also the latest model I got - the SB 18 LTX BL Q I - has a very impressive trigger. By far the most sensitive trigger I have ever encountered in any drill. You can literally drive a screw in with 1 rpm in the fastest setting without any trouble. For some reason it seems much easier to dose especially in the lower regions as the SB 18 LTX BL Quick I had before.

Too bad for me they just released a new 3 speed model (which goes up to 3800 rpm) two weeks after I got my new one. Ha :)

Yes, that ability to gently drive a screw is probably a reprogramming of the electronic speed/torque control.
It is great to have. I am not sure about the three speed drill. SB = SchlagBohrer = Percussion drill. It does add weight and noise. I prefer BS  [big grin].

Yes it does add a little weight, but I like being able to easily drill small holes in masonry with it. Also I prefer the higher rpm for masonry compared to a corded hammer drill.

What's not to like about the 3 speed model? Afraid they will have gearbox problems like the Makita's?
 
I think the 3-speed will be a very fine machine. If the speeds and torque are well applied/weighted a three speed drill can be a real asset. I just hope it is not a heavy drill and that the drill is both strong and speedy in gear two.

I have a four speed Fein and I use three of the speeds regularly - I could have been without the fourth (fastest) speed - but it doesn't bother me to have it since the machine is quite small and light.
 
Any ideas when it will be launched? My job is more toward carpentry now, and should I get the MT or KS?

Available (in Euro markets) more or less now.

As for your model choice, well that depends on your intended use of course.  One is a dedicated plunge/rip/rail Saw, with the (currently) world's best rail system, the other a perhaps more versatile x-cut/rip/carpentry Saw utilising both the same rail system and a series of differing length short x-cut rails.

For those obsessive enough to care, it appears that only the former will be supplied packaged within a systainer;  the larger/longer x-cut rail fitted precludes similar packaging with the latter.  In a similar vein, the latter also comes fitted with a slightly larger (165mm) blade, thus allowing a critically larger (40mm +) beveled rail-bound x-cut.  An extremely useful feature for general scantling work in my opinion.

Those early adopters who have preordered have been quoted a late July/early August delivery.

Given that few manufacturers actually make electrically commutated motors these days, I'm pretty confident that it's Metabo's German factory that will be the source of this particular motor.  Presumably a variant of their excellent E. C. cordless grinder motor, sealed-for-life & thus relatively immune from the depredations of swarf & dust.

As far as I'm aware, the market leaders in cell manufacture (Sanyo Panasonic & Samsung) both manufacture in China.  Despite being badged as of Eastern (or even Central) European origin, this will be true of both battery and other key componentry of just about each & every supposedly German manufactured tool.  Let's not delude ourselves:  I doubt there's a power tool available today that is truly, wholly of indigenous Teutonic manufacture!
 
I am one of the early adopters... Ordered my KSS 50cc back in mid May - only to see the delivery date being changed over and over and over again. I did change my order in late July to a PURE machine, since I have lots of LiHD batteries already.

The KSS 50cc arrived today, big thumbs up to the sales rep that delivered it to my door - after work - since I could not make it in time to pick it up at the shop. 



The Sarcophagus (Container for mere mortals) that houses the saw is a-HUGE. And Metal. I can't see myself using that so I will simply fit the saw in a SYS 4 (rail won't fit of course) and call it a day. I have most of the rails and add ons already so I am good to go. I have a few projects that the saw will tackle starting tomorrow.  8)

First impression is: it is large-ish. Larger than I thought it would be. Maybe a bit larger than the HKC55? Materials and plunge action and levers are first rate and operate verrrrry smoooooth. LED light seems to do the job, will find out tomorrow. I will keep the KSS 40 I have, for sure though. Both saws have their place in the arsenal. 

Now all I need is for Mafell to bring out that P1cc 18M bl...  8)
