Making a Luggage Rack with Shaper Origin...

I think it's super cool.... convenience, form factor, ease of use, minimal shop space requirements.

However, the huge drawback that holds me back from purchasing one is the proprietary tape.  It's not just the out of pocket expense - it's the ethics of recurring consumable cost that can be avoided and, more importantly, the $3000 machine becomes useless if/when the company goes under and the tape is no longer available.

I'll consider one when the tape issue has been properly resolved - i.e., an app to generate and print the pattern... whether Shaper offers it or the device gets rooted/jailbroken/reverse-engineered.

Here's a video of cutting two of them and them fitting right off the tool.

Thanks for the video Neil...that's pretty impressive. I'm amazed at the quality of the surface finish. No cutter marks or changes in depth.  [cool]

That has been addressed.

1 There are ‘Domino generators’ online that will create the fiducials you can then print. There is a specific algorithm for generating them that several figured out.  See http://browncowww.pythonanywhere.com as one example.  There are several others I have seen.

2 I personally create tape boards for a lot of work that I leave tape on and clamp adjacent to my work to reduce the tape used

Since the tool moves over the tape what Shaper has done is create a thin, low adhesive but durable tape with a custom printed pattern.  It has to be a consumable since on many projects the tool cuts through the tape.  I don’t consider it any more unethical than FT selling sandpaper, Gillette selling razor blades or HP selling ink.

In reality I consume very little tape relative to other supplies like sandpaper or router bits on other projects.

Neil,  your post is so laden with useful and inspiring information to lower the barriers to accepting newer technology.  I look forward to other SHAPER ORIGIN users adding to this thread with their own approaches. The luggage rack is very nice for sure but your fixture is something special again - "classic Neil".
At TSO we have some sheetmetal protype parts for design validation that had better edge finish with the SHAPER ORIGIN than laser cut ones.

Great video and nice shop. I would take this any time over CNC for the same reasons that you mentioned.
What type of floor you have in your shop? Is that epoxy with heavy flakes?
A shop tour would be nice if you have time or would like to do it. [smile]

Hi Neil,
Love the luggage rack! could you please provide the svg files. I am very interested in making this. My email is dannybirdie@yahoo.com

Regards,
Danny

I’m trying to remain ignorant, but seeing quick bites like this makes it harder!  First I need to learn Fusion 360!  Thanks for sharing!

You don't necessarily need Fusion 360 to make it work. It functions on .svg files that can be generated in much simpler software. I use Inkscape for mine. It isn't capable of creating 3D objects as far as the assembly itself, but it can certainly make the 2D parts themselves.
