Anybody own or have any experience with this Makita Jointer Planer? There is one for sale here in Hawaii on Craigslist and they are wanting $1700, originally bought for $5000 and taking best offers. Reviews seem positive and I don't have either a planer or jointer yet. Any advice on price? Pictures seem to indicate that its in pretty good shape though I've not seen it in person yet. Mahalo!

Have had my Makita 2030 for more than 20 years.  It is cast iron and built to last.  I have put 1000's of feet of poplar and maple through it and it keeps going and going.  I am still using the original planer and jointer knives,  just sharpen them occasionally.  The only thing that wore out are the planer rollers.  I had Western Roller recover them ($135 in 2001) and they are as good as new.

You certainly should look at it before buying if you can.  Run some wood through the planer and see how the rollers do.  If the rollers are worn out, you will have to push on the wood hard to get it through the planer.  Also check the planer table to make sure it goes up and down properly.  If it was abused, it may not operate smoothly.

I paid $1,250 in 1984.  I would say that $1,700 for one used is way too much to pay.  I could be wrong but I dont think the 2030 ever sold for $5,000.  A more reasonable price would be $500 particularly if it has some wear, if the rollers need to be recovered and if the knives need replaced.

If you can get it for less than $1,000 and it is in good shape, I would buy it.  It is a work horse.  The jointer is a joy to use and having the paner right there makes it doubly good.

Thanks for the information on the 2030. The person selling is a professional organizer and is helping his client purge stuff he doesn't use anymore. Sad that this world has come to having professional crap organizers as a profession! I'll take a look see and maybe make an offer. Again, Thanks for the advice as I've been debating the purchase of a planer.

It is a very good machine, but I am having problems finding the proper knives for it in Canada.  Any suggestions?

Go to a blade sharpening service and see if they will make you a set of knives.  That's how my buddy who rehabs old iron gets his.

I own one and have never had any problems with it although I clean and maintain all my equipment. I have read posts and don't believe all you read as I have very negative vibes about some responses. The machine is a very valuable asset to my shop and has been for over 20 years. People who have had problems did not do their research. The machine in good condition is well worth $1500.00 and would buy it immediately if I needed one.

I have one of these setting around that is hardly used. It sat in a tool store for years without being sold and the belts dried out. I didn't know that Western Roller could re-surface the belts so I didn't know what to do about the belts. I would be interested in selling this unit either as is or if I have to I will get the belts re-done. It has a spare blade. I have some pics but I think they are on my laptop.

Another 2030 has shown up on craigslist and the guy wants $700 for it. Seems like this is a good price based on the previous reponses. What I like is that there is no conversion between jointer and planer but what aside from rollers and blades should I be looking for? Thanks...

I paid $350 for mine and it was still in quite good shape though I think the rollers are getting worn.
