MAY 2008: MFK 700 Modular Router

I pretty much agree with Scott's choices for criteria but would emphasize construction methods (with details), photos/documentation/thorough explanation, and use of Festools.

This thread needs a bump. Has anyone seen any new or existing entries or member projects they want to discuss?

Any more comments on the criteria we should use or judging  specifically or in general.

I made this with my 11 year old son for a client on a tight budget. Only a final pic not made for the contest.

So should I even judge  the out of North America entries or not. I have not heard anything else on the topic. I still think they should be judged and not able to receive the prize. If a non North American wins I will send them the Festool banner and the first N.A. to place gets the Festool prize.

I am trying to get out of the non woodworking threads, but no one seems interested in the contest at the moment. Is there that much dissent over the May 12th rules?

Is this a non issue? Comments?

Hi Nickao. I should be done with another project this weekend. I'll post pics on Tuesday when I get back to work. I actually started this project 3 or 4 weeks ago so I didn't plan for a contest but it is a very unique use of Festool products. It's very tempting to post pics before it's done but I have to hold out. :-X

You are a machine Mr Wyko! Is it another Wyko or a turning or what? Now you have my interest peaked!

Posting a teaser definitely will not hurt your chances as far as I am concerned!

I would but This computer doesn't have a card slot for my camera disc. Sorry :-[ It's a turning with a story. ;D I have a hard time watching tv when I have all that exotic wood in my shop calling my name. LOML watches those home renovation shows. It drives me nuts to see some of the things they do. :D I just can't bear it so I go to my cave. ;)

Here is my problem with competitions.
This is a pointless self indulgent rant so don't read it unless you want to read something slightly amusing.

It all started with the Pine Wood Derby when I was a Cub Scout. I put a lot of work into my car and it really looked good. Everyone said it was the best but there was no prize for concourse. Oh well, maybe it would do good in the race. It did! My car came in third overall, but, they only had prizes for first and second place. Drat! Maybe next year.

Next year we made and raced balsa wood rockets powered by rubber bands and a plastic propeller. I don't know if other troops raced rockets but it only made sense for our troop since nearly all our Dads worked at Marshall Space Flight Center.
I didn't have the best looking rocket that year but it was fast and came in second, oh boy! Alas, there was a prize for first place only. Double drat! I decided to quit the Scouts and play football instead.

Years later I was working on a BFA at Florida State (my Dad had been transferred to Kennedy Space Center) and the art department decided to have a juried show of student work and award prizes. At that time I was about 15 degrees farther left than Che and didn't believe that one individual's creative expression should be held above another's and wrote a persuasive screed opposing the ranking of artists. After the exhibit I was told by the faculty who organized the show that I would have one the top prize  ::)

So, I got issues with contests awright!?

I think the top prize is the knowledge we gain from each other. ;)I think that's worth being a member in its self. There's a lot of talent here. I'm not seeing the down side :) Made good progress tonight on my latest piece. I have some delicate work on the inside and the slow part, Finish. Finish is really the beginning of the 2nd 1/2 of the job. ;D

Don't worry about a guaranteed and crowned winnah jes yet.

See, father Bob just told me he is starting his contest project right now,er,
Monday and rest assured we are going to have a brand mew MFK 700.

Age and treachery my friends, at least that is what he thinks.

I just asked him, "before or after the canoe?"  ;D

And Michael, 15 degrees to the left of Che? Ha!

I worked for Bella Abzug.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nick, yeah, I can be pretty demanding (want to talk about demanding, you should try working for me). I want to apologize to everyone, best mostly the members with contest entries. It was not intention to ruin this for anyone. I'll back off the pressure on the contest. Good luck to everyone.

I'm throwing another one in the hat It was my main reason for buying a Domino.;D I have to agree, The doors are top notch and great documentation.

Everyone,
Sometimes -- MYSELF INCLUDED -- we tend to get too serious.  Let's just have fun with this.

With the open nature of the contest, judges can simply pick a project to win this month.  Next month, anyone not picked is automatically entered again, so there doesn't have to be any hard feelings.  If you want to ease up on the judging, that's not a problem!  Let's relax.

Sometimes, what seems easier is actually more difficult.  I ran random drawings for Domino machines back when this forum was established.  Let me tell you, it was NOT FUN managing randomness!

Really, the "judging" for this contest does not need to be any more complicated than the usual discussions we have here.  It should just be a natural response.

Stay with this idea.  Again, it's just the first month.  We're just getting the idea going.

With that said, Nick, I fully understand if you can't judge.  That's not a problem.  You've done a lot already helping to get this thing going, and I appreciate that.  I'll respect whatever decision you make here.

Matthew

Everyone,
I've spent a lot of time going through all the projects in the "Member Projects" section, and there is one project I favor for the first contest.  I won't yet say which one, because I want to make sure my fellow judges are ready to do that.

Also, keep in mind we're only halfway through the month, so there's still time for someone to swoop in and change everything.  But part of the fun of this is to discuss projects, debate a little, and then choose someone.

Matthew

Thats right folks, the month is only 1/2 over.

And Father Bob (see above) just said,

First, no, very first thing tomorrow, Imma gonna get started and show those whippersnappers.

Like that old adage, it aint over till the old geezer (insert verb of choice).

BOY is that ever deep :) I'm just trying to have a little fun ;) This really is anybodys game. There's a lot of talent here.

Because it would be sad if a previous winner could not compete for a Kapex if that is ever the prize.
