Hi.

Anyone got any experience of these? http://www.metabo.com/Product-catalogue-handheld-powertools.24048+M5cc4fa1f7e2.0.html

I believe it's the rebadged Starmix one from the videos involving wet cement and some Germans.

I'm interested to know if the hose connector at the vac end happens to be the same as the hose end of the Festool hoses? The 50mm connector I mean. Can take picture to make this clearer if required.

Anyway, from the picture is "looks" a little like it might be about the right size, although it may also look a little Female as opposed to the Festool fitting.

Cheers.

Good morning Wufles!

The Metabo vac you have linked to is likely more equivalent to a Ridgid or Shop Vac you'd get at a Big Box store. This is an "L" class vac, so (FOGers across the Pond please correct me) it is not a HEPA-type vac.

The 50mm hose connection should be fully compatible with the Festool hoses.

If you're looking for the really heavy duty Starmix vac you see in the "Can you Break It?" videos, the Metabo version is the ASR35.

There is a newer version of this vac (based on the latest Starmix ISP vacs) arriving in North America in late March or early April, part #US602057800. These vacs have dual HEPA filters and AutoClean functionality, so the vac uses one filter while it pulses the other, so you get uninterrupted suction. Earlier vacs had a Systainer docking station, that station can be adapted for the latest generation of vac, and the rumor is that Starmix is developing an updated Systainer dock for the ISP series.

Without reinventing the wheel, there is a discussion of these Starmix (and their re-branded siblings) vacs to be found here:
http://mafellusersforum.com/thread/55/starmix-vacs

Hope this helps!

EDIT: Oops! Just checked your tags, looks like you're in UK, so you should already have access to the updated Metabo ASR35. Sorry 'bout that!  [eek]

LOL, hey man, I use the best tools I can get my hands on, regardless of badging or color  [big grin]

Cheers Tom.

I already have a heavily pimped CT26 that isn't as portable as it used to be since boom arm and what not was added, so wanted something to back it up for outside the workshop, but also something that can take the hoses I have already in place for my dust collector (which I built around the Festool 50mm sizes).

So ideally, I'd like to separate my Thein collector from the CT26, and use the 50mm hose out of a more portable vac and into the collector, then 50mm out of the collector for use on whatever.

Unless this thing is bagless and actually any good, in which case I'd not even bother with the Thein collector in-line. Does that even make sense?! Had a Karcher a while back that "claimed" to be bagless and that meant unclogging the filter every few seconds.

Can't find the ASR35 for sale anywhere in the UK, and if I did, I'd expect it to be quite expensive compared to this little one.

Hi Wuffles!

For the Metabo ASR35 (or other Starmix ISP vac), you have the choice of using either fleece filter bags, paper filter bags, a plastic liner, or you can go bag less and just empty the drum.

With the dual HEPA filters and alternating AutoClean pulsation, you shouldn't need to ever mess with the filters, other than to replace them every few years.

Price-wise, here in North America the Metabo ASR35 is somewhere between the CT-26 and CT-36.

I might have to get one of these smaller ones and see how it fairs with all my hoses. The Wife wanted to get (ok, I planted the seed) a mini or a midi for use around the house, but this is half the price and looks very much like it will do the job in a more portable fashion.

Finding info on it is hard though, even the manufacturer website doesn't give much away in terms of bag/bagless.

The URL is wrong, someone has registered that domain and pointed it at this one. The correct URL is easy to find through a google search for mafell users forum though.

Wow, that's creepy! Heaven forbid we have an informed community. Will we be collecting books for burning next?

Just do a Google search for Mafell Users Forum Starmix and that should get you the appropriate thread.

Update.

Thanks Tom, took the plunge and purchased one. Runs bagless*, which is fine for me as...

...it does indeed share exactly the same port size as the Festool vacs! Which means with zero modification I can sling my Thien collector in front of it and work to my hearts content. Which is handy as I was hoping to build a bigger Thien collector for my CT26 as I seem to fill it far too often and then start using the bag inside the vac, and we can't have that.

The hose that comes with it is virtually the same hose as the grey (non AS) Festool one but with a slightly different end at the vac side. It's a female that goes over the 50mm port. Whereas the Festool slips inside the 50mm port.

No speed control as it's much more basic than the CT and I knew that, but it's certainly more portable as it's made mostly of plastic and doesn't have a whacking great big boom arm on it and hoses going all over the place. Will try and figure out a way of making it less sucky for sanding applications as there are a couple of jobs her indoors has wanted done inside the house for a while now, and bang goes my excuse for not doing it.

Thanks again.

Oh, and the Metabo XXL 3 year warranty covers this model too.

*although the manual on closer inspection suggests otherwise. Bags will be a problem as nobody stocks them, so I will make a bag and put it around the filter.

Glad to hear you found a vac that works for you!  [big grin]

Which version did you end up selecting, the ASR35 or the more compact vac?

The one I was enquiring about originally. I have a CT26 with a boom arm etc, just needed a portable something. Plus the ASR35 doesn't seem to be available here.

"ASR 35 M" is also available here:
https://www.engineeringagencies.co.uk/product.php/4288/63/metabo_asr35_m_110v_m_class_wet_dry_vac
@ £595.30 inc VAT.
Says 3 to 5 day delivery.

Phoned them yesterday, and spoke to very helpful chap (whose name I've forgotten) as I've been looking into
these type of vacuums.  Unfortunately not available in 240 volt - quite a few of my Festools only work on 240v.
Also, for me, lack of speed control rules it out + I'm moving away from 110v - somewhere along the line my two Midi's (110v, 220v) will go.
Don't yet know if any of the other machines of this type have speed control - for some reason just took it for granted
they all did - too used to Festool I guess!

Oh btw, if anyone wants £50 voucher, just PM me, and I'll send to first person interested - diabolically expensive Xmas, New Year + financial
stars not in alignment - mean cannot take advantage.   :(

Richard

(Edit:  Voucher now gone.)
