Metal Can & Strainer Basket

Came across Ramon's video and he had an interesting idea on using metal can and strainer basket to clean stuff out.

Anyone know of where to source these cheaper?

Steel coffee cans.  Poke a bunch of small holes in the bottom of one of them to act as a strainer.  Cheap enough?

I know this works, because my dad used to use them like that in the 1950s through the mid 1970s.  I moved out of their house in 1972, so he might have continued doing so.

I cleaned my bicycle chain in one, but I just fished it out.  No straining required.

Back the, I’m sure I cleaned it with gasoline and used no gloves.  A simpler era.

Nice. Thank you. Didn’t even think of using coffee cans lol

I’m pretty sure that the maker of those cleaning cans saw someone cleaning parts in coffee cans.  He thought, “I bet I could make money by producing coffee cans expressly for that purpose.”

Also note a large kitchen strainer/colander would work fine too.  Amazon sells them for about $12.00.  Plenty to choose from.  You probably want about a 5” diameter version.

FWIW...
Years & years ago when you purchased a gallon of carburetor cleaner, it came packaged just like that with the basket already in the gallon container. I used the stuff as an all purpose cleaner from carburetors to cluster gears. I think they packaged the stuff that way because the cleaner was so strong/toxic that if you got any on your hands it would attack the nerves in your hands after about 5 minutes.

Back then, it was the only way you could get industrial level "hot solution" cleaning with a room temperature cleaning solution. I actually wish the stuff was still available.  [smile]

I remember those days. You probably can't buy anything that works that well anymore. That's likely a good thing for people's health, but takes more elbow grease too.
We used kerosene in the parts washer, before the days of a mobile Safety Kleen man. I might (or might not) have used gasoline a time or two as a kid, with my first car.

You can still get carb cleaner with the dip can, but I don't expect the chemical itself is as good as the old stuff.

Used to be nothing better on earth for killing wasps than a 99c can of AutoZone carb cleaner.  Now?  You're basically just washing the damn things.
