After messaging with TimTool and getting his plans, I decided to start a thread for guys in the US to discuss how they are going to attack this project. I spent an entire plane flight going over it and once I finish this MFT, it will have my full attention. I know some guys just got them, but what are your initial thoughts?

The first thing for me is that all the measurements, copy rings, and router bits are in metric. I have converted all the numbers and it totally looks doable, but now thinking that Im one metric measuring device away from doing it in metric. What are you guys doing?

Also Tim uses a band saw and a drill press in his construction and I have neither of these, so Im wondering what guys in the same situation are doing for a workaround? I was thinking of using the RAS to sand the T Loc latch as opposed to using a bandsaw at 20 degrees.

Tim said he would chime in on this thread and try to help us out. I know for me personally that Ive never done a project like this before, so i would love to hear what you guys are doing? Thanks Eric

I bought the plans too but am too busy right now to work on this. So I'll probably just wait for you to get it right and then do that!  [tongue] [big grin]

Ron, thats a lot of pressure to put on a fellow forum member.

i am hoping to make some progess on these soon.
i am planning to build 4 to start. mftb sys1,2,,4,4

I would suggest anyone building these for the first time to either start with building one prototype to see if you have everything right, or building several, but once you get to the crucial parts of positioning the attachment mechanisms to always do it on one model and check if it works before doing the rest.
That allowed me to adjust my jigs where necessary so the rest of the models were spot on.

Tim, im gonna see how much of this project can be done in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 inch MDF first, as a prototype, when I have time. I just talked to my mill and they always have 2 foot and under stuff that they will practically give away, so might do this thing in style. Eric

Just saw the website for this and the video. Nice work Tim!

Since I do not have the plans its a bit hard to comment on what could be done differently. That said if you do not have a drill press then you could use a router or hand held drill to make the holes. In instead of a bandsaw a jigsaw or handsaw might be used. The slots on the top of the sides could be holes as an example instead of the angled slots. The t-loc piece could be molded with a sander etc. The edging on the working top could be skipped if needed. Just make the mdf top larger. You'd loose a tiny bit of durability but I don't see it as a big issue. Lots of way to simplify the cuts and holes.

That said I like what Tim did and his attention to detail definitely shines.

Thanks Mwildt, you are right about your recommendations, i would just add that i only used a drill press to make one of the jigs, but that was overkill really. I still had to make some holes with a cordless drill since the neck of the drill press doesn't extend far enough. so you can do without. The holes on top of the actual MFTB are made with a router.
on my site theres a list of tool that are either required, suggested or optional. This project is doable with the most basic woodworking tools, but obviously i used the tools i already had, i just had to buy a spade bit and a copy ring that i didn't have yet.

Just wondering if any of you guys have completed the MF-TB from the plans?

Yep - I've read them all the way through  [big grin]

(the butler did it)

i have a set half done. i dominoed minr together instaead of rebates. . should be finished in a few weeks

I just finished one except for the latch to secure the top closed.

Plans are OK but are heavily biased towards the templates.  There is some calculation required to get from template openings and guide bushing/router cutter diameters, to layout dimensions if you are only building one.

I would like to suggest that you do not place 3 dominoes along the long side of the top to attach the solid wood edging as this will likely expose a domino when you make the relief cut for the latch.

The only other anomaly I encountered is the stated distance from the front to the rear pads that engage with the top of a T-lock.  My distance was about 4mm longer than specified to achieve a snug fit.

That's great Festoolian, would love to see some pics when operational.  (first 3 to post pics of an operational model in the MFTB thread will get plans for the MFTC for free, whatever it may be...  [popcorn] )
It's true that if you only make 1 then you could skip most of the jigs, i really made these plans with the idea of serial production. So people could either build several for themselves, or for others and make a buck out of it.
I have been asked a few times if i was selling finished models, i think they would sell like cupcakes on the local CL.

Good suggestion about not joining the front edge with a domino in the center, though i did it on all mine and exposed the domino when routing the recess  [embarassed]
About the bottom pads, i intentionally made the jig opening a bit too small on the plans so you could enlarge it until it fits just right, 4mm seems allot though.

Eric,

You need to get one of these built in time for the party.  [thumbs up]  [cool]

Seth

I was just making "Parking" signs after work for the party, no time now, Eric
