Has anyone here done Paul Marcel's modification to the horizontal base of the MFK700?  The base limits the length of bit you can use to flush trim to a max of about 5/8".  The modification increases the length of the opening so you can use longer bits.  He (Half Inch Shy) has a blog entry with some photos but not very detailed and no video.  Was wondering if any one here can offer some tips on how not to screw this up.....:)

Thanks,

Len

Have done it to both 1.5 and 0 degree bases. It's easy with the tools he recommends - takes about 20 mins for each. Just follow his blog and take your time. You can cut off the ears with a standard hacksaw but you will need a fret saw or similar for the first cuts

Thanks Andy. I'll give it a try.  Can you do the entire mod with a fret saw?

Yes, that's what Paul uses. Cutting the ears is slower with a fretsaw as you don't have much of a stroke due to the length of cut vs the length of blade - which is why I went with a hacksaw. You can also put masking tape over the areas where the blade rubs the paint to ensure a clean cut
