MFT Cart

I've had the Paulk style top built for awhile but finally got around to building my MFT Cart and thought I'd share. Still have to figure out what I want to due in the back for track and tool storage but when finished it will get a couple doors on it. Think about some heavy duty hinges that when open I can set my miter station on them.

I’m torn between whether to build the Paulk benches to set on top of my MFT sys cart or a 8020 MFT table above it.  The pro of the Paulk bench is that the two halves can be easily taken upstairs to the garage where I break down my 4x8’ sheets and could be set on saw horses if I needed 2 MFT surfaces in the basement during a project. The pro of the 8020 table is I could attach a guide rail hinge plate (I’ve an error of only 0.002” over 12” when using the dog holes to align panel and guide rail so the hinge plate is more of an expensive convenience) and the festool vac clamping unit someday.  I guess it’s good to have options as everybody has a different workflow and consideration of what’s important to them ...

Thanks, and yes I wanted something mobile as I started my house remodel.  It's fairly light and stored against a wall in my other garage. Also fits in the bed of my truck when I need to help a friend. I have an 8 foot stationery bench in my other garage that I stored my tools under and I think this will work so much better, that bench will go away when I do the garage remodel. I also like the flexibility of this top and cart, flip the top over and have a flat work surface without holes, remove the top and use it with a set of horses and that frees up the cart as another lower work surface.

The biggest negative for me is the paulk eats up a lot of vertical space that could be some extra drawers/storage which is at a premium for myself but I also rarely work offsite.  I like the look of those chestnut style MFT's for mobile/storable MFT.  If I had to break down sheets in the garage and then move them to a basement shop I would look into something like those.  They fold flat and could lean up against a wall and take virtually zero floor space.  That way you dont have to lug anything up/down stairs.

Thanks [member=73094]afish[/member]!  You’ve a great point, it would be nice to have my tape measure, rules, pencil, square, and triangle in a drawer just underneath the out feed table which is where I’m marking up the wood before cutting and the 8020 table would be better for this.

Also, it could be good not to have to haul anything upstairs!  I’ve not found anything about “chestnut MFT table” ... could you link one for me so I know what you’ve in mind?

Thanks [member=73094]afish[/member], I like it!!  The website where this was being sold no longer exists.  I did find a thread here which might be the original design but even he seemed reluctant to sell the plans ...https://www.festoolownersgroup.com/festool-jigs-tool-enhancements/another-diy-mft-build/ but there's several others with similar design so maybe somebody out there has some specs.

Ya, I dont think the chestnut is around anymore.  I saw the other thread too.  Not sure why he didnt want to sell the plans but as others pointed out trying to sell woodworking projects to woodworkers is a tough sell.  Especially when its a pretty easily duplicated object. It appears he found out the hard way.  Im not sure what the overall size his was but I would probably do 32x48 for the top.  That way you could make 2 and build some type of spreader bars/joists to span/space in-between the two of them so you could have a full 4x8 top if needed. Or two smaller benches.  The rest is pretty easy to duplicate.  I would also probably go with dowel pins to locate the top instead of the tenon system he uses I wouldnt glue the dowels so if one gets cut you could just pop it out and put in a fresh one.  I would also probably skip having the top overhang the sides.

It wouldn't be to hard to draft the table in Fusion 360 or some other CAD software and as I understand it's not that hard to add the CNC tools/paths afterwards.  It's to bad he thought he had Gold since he could've made a decent return by just selling the plans for $10-$20.  Thanks for the ideas ... I definitely have to make one or two of these style for my garage.

I would also add a bunch of slots/holes in the bottom shelf.  Not only would it make it lighter but it would allow tools with blades to sit flat

I actually modeled it about 5 years ago, but never got around to cutting it. May need a little tweaking but I think it's ready to go. I would be tempted to make it a "Vario" style top now.
