Hey all

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the Veritas MFT Clamping Kit vs Qwas Dogs?

Also I know there has been lots of discussion around the fit of the Veritas dogs, given that, if you get the kit, do people recommend getting the 19.9mm dogs as well?

If you lean towards the Qwas Dogs, does anyone have any recommendations as to which to get? I was thinking Fence Dogs, Speed Dogs, Low profile and Normal Dogs.

Cheers
Anthony

I would recommend the Qwas normal dogs over any others for best fit, though I use Parf Dogs as well for other functions.

If you haven't looked at Precision Dogs, you should give them a look.

They are by far my favorites on so many levels. They are very much like a system (short dogs work with clamp plates and other items) and the price is great as well as the excellent quality.

I have Qwas, Parf, veritas, Precision, Rail, fence and every other kind of dog and I reach for the Precisions quite often.

I have the Veritas set, but feel that I don't really use all in the set. Mostly I just use a about half of what was included, but I do like the Parf dogs in the set and you can buy those separately from Lee Valley. I also have some dogs from Rip Dogs that came with a ripping jig I bought from them. I also like those dogs and some of their other fixtures for ripping. I'd look into the other dogs, as suggested by those who have experience with those. For me, it was what I got use to working with. I think the Parf dogs and dogs from Rip Dogs fit well in the holes on my MFT.

So here goes. They are lighter, have a hole (or threads) through them and have a little relief under the collar that helps them sit very well in the holes. Here is a pic of the Precision, Qwas and Parf above the table.

Here they are in the table (same order):

And finally, side by side (you can see the relief here):

Don't get me wrong, the other two dogs are great as well and each has their place when needed but the precision dogs are part of my system. I can use them with the clamping elements or under my precision plate so they serve a lot of purposes for me.

As far as play goes, it "fits" a little better but that may be because of the relief collar and the height of the head which is under 5mm.

On the calipers, they measure:
Precision 19.95mm
Qwas 19.90
Parf 19.90

Hope this all helps!

I have them and the Qwas. I like the adjustable stop collar on the Precision ones and sometimes it is unnecessary so I use the Qwas ones.

Just like an Iditarod racer says... You can never have too many dogs. ;)

Thanks! Also, just wondering how you find using the Precision Clamp Mount and if its worth it?

I use it a lot. It Is very quick to use and is a great hold down tool. Never have to adjust it really. Shot this a few minutes ago for you.

[member=21412]bkharman[/member] thanks for the video. It really shows how easy the Precision dogs work.

Just ordered a Clamping plate

Have you found that one is enough or do you use the 2. Also do you prefer the Kreg or Bessey? I've typically used Bessey, but haven't used this style before.

I have a lot of Bessey K clamps but in this case I really wanted the Kreg due to the size range it could hold down.
I'm have one and generally it is fine. Sometimes I use dogs with it in other holes to keep it from moving around a bit on the far end, but I think I am going to get another plate and clamp. I think I will be done with clamps for a while.

I have the Parf dogs, 4 small and 4 large. They work well but I'm still not happy with the small amount of slopp. The larger ones fit a bit better but that might be just the extra weight. I just returned a set of Veritas dogs to Lee Valley this week, very poor fit for me at least. I do like my Quas rail dogs but fit is not that critical because of the set up procedure. Very impressed with the Precision plate, way better then what I've been using.

I set out to get the 6" one and that is which one is in the pics. I didn't see a good fit for the smaller one (for my use) because I was really wanting something that could "reach over" a larger board.

YMMV
