MFT dogs with FS cutting guides

Hi RMW,
I'd be interested in a set of these, if you havent sold them all? I was going to go for the QWAS dogs but your design addresses several shortcoming I can see with them as well as being more extensible. If you ever get around to a taller set for the TS75 I would be interested in those too.

Thanks
Kevin

You probably have no need to wait for a taller set. Just do what I am doing.

As background I will be out of reliable post contact for the next 7 weeks so RMW sent one set of Rip dogs without the pin dogs but with an extra set on hole dogs. This was to let me get to use them without having to wait on the now delayed pin dogs.

A suggestion was to use shoulder bolts  but they are not easily and quickly available here. I had to come up with an alternative so a quick trip to Tokyo Hands got me some 8mm x 1.5meter studding, 1.5meters of stainless steel tube that just fits over the studding and some long 8mm nuts. 5 minutes with a mini hack saw got me this.

[attachthumb=1]

My first choice is to use the SS tube like this.

[attachthumb=2]

That will locate in the Rip clip like this (sorry no MFT to demo on)

[attachthumb=4]

If that is not good I can try this

[attachthumb=3]

So you can see that you are not limited to the hight of supplied pin dogs

Kevin, if everyone who expressed interest takes the dogs they asked for I think they are sold out. Once I have everything in hand I was going to reach out to everyone on that list and give them 7-10 days to respond, afterwards if any are left I will make them available.

I am hoping to get some feedback from the initial users, make any revisions that might be needed and then if there is demand for more I can have another batch made up.

Jerome's latest post make me wonder if a better design might be a single type of dog with the tapped hole and then maybe a pin with a corresponding threaded section.

Thanks for the interest, stay tuned.

I figured out how to mount my phone so I could make a couple quick & dirty videos showing the dogs in action. I neglected to show how to use the low-profile dogs to line up stock for a 90 degree cut but I assume that is obvious to anyone familiar with qwas dogs or toolimprovement dogs.

This shows the dogs used along with the narrow-stock guides I am fiddling with right now:

Rip Dogs demo

This video shows the cutting capacity between the dogs in both directions on the MFT:

Rip Dogs capacity

This last video just shows another means of mounting the guide pins to the MFT extrusions, which increases the cutting capacity:

Rip Dog - New Guide Pin Design

Sorry for the poor video quality, Paul Marcel I am not...  [embarassed]

Thanks,

RMW

great job. cant wait. that last pin set up has a lot of potential for angled cuts . you could slide them up or down the extrusion to change the angle but leave the work piece on the table.

you have lots of ideas roling around up there

Hi Jerome,
Cool idea, it solves the height problem with the TS75 very neatly.  All I need now is someone to drop out and get my mits on a set of these dawgs.

Quasi update: still have not receive the guide dogs, but I am hoping they will arrive this week. Sorry for the delay.

In the meantime I was banging around in the shop and finally figured out how to adapt the MFT fence to the dogs. I have been wanting to use the fence because of the flag stop but did not want to revert to the angle unit to mount it. It dawned on me that I could harness the precision of the 20mm hole grid if I could somehow attach the fence to the dogs.

The solution is a simple block that slips over the guide pin and screws to the t-slot in the fence. I purposely made them just slightly narrower than the dog so they would pull the fence into contact with the edge of the dog and assure the fence is aligned with the MFT holes.

The only drawback is you lose a couple inches of cutting capacity since the fence sits inside the first row of dogs. With the dog attached to the MFT from below with a knob it is rock-solid, and it can be set at 45 degrees also.

What is the current ETA of The DogsW/FS Cutting Guides ,Robert

Robert,

The "pin" dogs have been re-made and are in the QC queue being inspected, assuming they are okay I will receive them this week. I will post the list of people who signed up for them and start shipping as soon as possible.

The clips have turned out to be the heart of the system, there are a number of ways to mount pins to the MFT or other jigs. This is a cross-cutting jig I made being used with the clips and guides to cut narrow pieces of 48" ply:

I have had a chance to use the prototypes over the last few weeks and really have come to like them. I have been experimenting with other setups (including using the MFT fence & stop, ripping narrow-stock and w/ parallel guides) and now have a couple setups mostly ironed out that allow me to cut full 4' by 8' sheets on the MFT in a very small space. My current work-shed is only 10' by 12' with cabinets and tools along the 10' walls and the MFT in the center, I can just squeak a full sheet in and make all my cuts. I shot these videos over the weekend while making some drawers for my shop cabinets.

Homemade Festool Parallel Guides

Narrow-Stock Guides for Festool Track Saw

After using my parallel guides and narrow-stock guides for the past couple weeks I am not really happy with the way I mounted them to the rails. It works okay but is a bit clumsy and sticky sliding on and off the rail. I am concerned that minor differences in the rails will make it worse, but I have a re-design in mind that I need time to try.

Thank you for the update and the videos.A workshop 12x12 is a little on the tight side.Ill be looking for your E-Mail. Robert  [smile]

Finally!  [thumbs up] [thumbs up] [thumbs up]

They look great, fit my MFT perfectly and the finish is good.

I will post info tonight on the final details for ordering them. Looking forward to getting them out there and receiving some feedback!

I couldn't find a post from me on this thread, but if you have any extras please include me on the distribution of the information.

cant wait.
iv  improvised a set up like this yesterday ( basically put qwas rail dogs upside down ). worked ok but this will take that away. i couldnt trust that it was always against the pin.

Actually I just read this thread - If anyone cancels, I'd like to order a set - shipped to Canada.

Thanks

Chris

Great work RMV! Has there been any interest in the parallel guides? I for one am very interested!
Maybe you could sell just the railbracket and stops and let people order their preferable size of Incra
tracks for them self? As pointed out, I´m dying for one of those brackets!

Please advise as to payment method, If you use paypal I will need a paypal address to sent payment. Please also give me a total for payment.

Sal

Sal,

I plan to use PayPal only and will only ship to the address linked to your PayPal account, that way I can process the payment, postage and labels all at once thru PayPal.  I want to do it this way to keep control of who is sending $$, that way I have a fighting chance of not receiving $$ from anyone who was not on that original list.

If you send me your email address I will process the PayPal invoice ASAP. You can post your email address here, PM me or email me at ripdogs@live.com (I set up this account to keep this separate from the rest of my email).

A "set" is made up of 2 rip dogs (w/pins), 2 guide dogs (no pins), & 2 rip clips w/thumb screws/t-nuts.

[attachthumb=#]

The total cost ended up slightly higher that I first hoped, a set is $100 + postage/packaging. I purchased padded envelopes and labels for shipping, $5 will cover those costs + USPS first class mail. I will have to confirm postage overseas, it looks like that will be $10 total but I still need to verify it with the post office.

Also - early on I learned that the pin dogs needed to be anchored to the MFT to prevent them from wobbling, the other dogs are fine with just a friction fit. All the dogs are tapped for a M8-1.25 thread so you can just use the knobs from the Festool clamping elements. I ordered a couple dozen M8 thumb screws and over-sized washers that will work if someone does not already have a set of the knobs. If anyone needs 2 thumb screws/washers I can add them in for another $8, just let me know to add them to the invoice.

Fair Warning For Anyone Ordering:

These dogs are sized to fit what I believe to be the current, "standard" MFT hole that is specified as being 20mm. They fit my MFT perfectly, I purchased it about a year ago, per my (cheap, Chinese) calipers the holes measure between 19.98mm and 20.02mm. The dogs were specified when ordered as 19.9mm +/- 0.025mm, per my calipers they measure between 19.91mm and 19.95mm. If you have not measured your MFT holes you may wish to before ordering, if there is an issue and anyone has to return them I will refund the purchase price less postage.

I am traveling next week but will process all requests I receive payment for by this Sunday (3/18) and have them in the mail on Monday (3/19). After that I won't be able to get back to anyone or process any requests for one week+.

I did my best to gather up all the requests both from posts to the thread and PM sent to me, if I have missed anyone I apologize in advance. I will give everyone on the list 7  -10 days to respond and then if there are any unclaimed sets I will update the thread with the availability.

Lastly, my appreciation to everyone who posted or sent comments/suggestions to me. I learned a great deal from the process and hope to use it to turn some of the other ideas I have been playing with into reality. The Incra parallel guides are next on my list but after using them for a while I think the design can be improved upon and I need a little time to test another design.

Thanks again,

RMW

Fit question - is anyone using these on the older MFT 1280 / 800 tables? Do these dogs fit the older (3+ years, non V groove rails) MFT's?
