MFT dogs with FS cutting guides

Emer,

You nailed the +'s & -'s, i.e. fast change over/accurate cuts versus cutting capacity/what the heck do I do with the rail...

It looks like you had a mega-MFT top made (from your photo), is it CNC-machines precise and is that what you plan to use for the Ron Paulk setup? If I had the room I personally think a top that is about 40" by 60" would be the most all-around useful size, big enough to handle full sheets yet not too big. Post a picture if you get the larger top done.

Thanks for reminding me about the fence-mounting dogs that John/toolimprovements sells, it prompted me to order a set today, which I had been meaning to do. John makes excellent stuff, well thought out and beautifully done.

I got a chance to use the dogs on the mft.  I really liked it.  I felt that my cuts were more accurate. I never cut any angles on the mft, so I'm glad to get that big thing off of there.  It was really easy to make some cross cuts, clear the table to do something else, then drop right back in with perfect square cuts.  The only two down sides I can think of now are, that you loose some capacity, and now you need a place to put the rail after a cut.  I got my Incra track and stop today.  Still haven't had a chance to make my Ron Paulk table, but that's the plan.

yeah I had a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" uv baltic birch cnc'd and ripped down the middle like Ron's table.  My friend had a 3/4 sheet cnc'd and cross cut so he could fit it in the back of his truck.  he just throws it on two saw horses.  We used dominos to registers the two halves..  now that i've had a chance to try his, I think two 5x5's would be perfect.  I could use the dogs to rip and cross cut full sheets. If there was something that worked like the clamping elements, but more precise, we could use them as adj stops and get rid of the parallel guides.  right now I use a 2700 rail to clean one edge and a 3000 rail with parallel guides attached.  with the dogs i could get rid of one rail

Is it going to be possible to get any of the mft dogs seperatley, or only as a set?

I am playing with a couple idea along that line, i.e. something that uses the MFT holes to mount and at the same time precisely registers itself to the cut-line on the guide rail. so far everything I have come up with has been too complicated to be practical.

I am planning to make more dogs, after the production problems I had on these I want to find a different shop to make them but I have not had the time to do so yet. I want to make up a big batch and definitely some extras that I can sell individually. Stay tuned.

how about if you had your rip dog pin threaded on the top  and a shoulder not threaded. and a long bar with a slot in it  that rides the shouler. a nut would tighten down the bar at the measurment

Sorry for hijacking this thread but any news or tip on where I should start looking for these?

No however I believe another FOG member may be coming out with a similar product soon which may negate the need for me to pursue it further.

Any progress with those parallel guide rail bracket? Would love a pair of those!

Ron and Ryan Wenner are showing them on their website as being an upcoming product, I have not idea the timing but the announcement is here.

Curious if there is any detailed feedback from anyone who got the Rip Dogs? I am considering making another batch (a friend of mine is agitating for one of the sets I kept for myself...) but hoped for some comments before taking the plunge.

Was anyone disappointed or especially happy? Any refinements you can recommend?

Thanks,

'Well I definitely want a set and if anyone doesn't want theirs, PM me and I will take them off your hands.

Looks like I am late to the party.
Please let me know if you plan on getting more.\
Thanks

RMW    I guess I thought I posted this already, guess not.

The Rip Dogs are great I have set them up in my MFT and in my UWB and they are right one every time. I use for both Crosscut and rips in my carcase building now and they have saved me alot of time in the process.

Sorry this took so long, but like them alot and recommend them to all

Thanks Sal, appreciate the feedback & glad you are getting some use from them. I am teetering on the edge of doing another batch, mostly inertia (i.e. laziness) holding me back.

There was a recent thread (http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-jigs-tool-enhancements/how-i-rip-ff-and-door-pieces/) where tjbnwi was using the MFT fence and a wood spacer to set width for cuts < than the width of the rail. After seeing that it hit me that cutting narrow stock was just that easy - using the pin-dogs instead of the MFT fence to butt the spacer against.  [doh]

Planning to make some reusable plywood spacers for common widths, just bore a 1" hole at the right offset from the guide rail edge and drop them over the pin dog.  Use a different offset from each edge of the spacer and one set will give you 4 different cut widths.

Almost too simple a concept for me to get my twisted mind around...  [scratch chin]

Are these still available?

They are not, made/sold the original batch of +/- 30 sets & then there did not seem to be enough interest to do another batch.
