Here's a shooting board I made with a spare MFT800 top.

Should you not have a piece of wood going at 45 deg instead of pipe ?  The idea of the wood is so that you don't get any break out when the plane cuts through the back side of the work piece.  If you use your pipe method for 90 deg then you would get bad break out.
