If there was ever any doubt, we all now know why Eli went to Australia.  Very funny!!  Well done, mate!

I don't know how you could all know, I'm still trying to figure out why. ;D

Fred/All,

I know that you guys are anxious to learn more about the new MFT3.  I had enlisted Matthew's help to poll the group for a concise list of questions so that I can make sure that we address as many of them as possible when the information about the MFT3 available.  I will be including answers to your questions as well as product photos in an upcoming edition of the SysNotes email newsletter.  Here are some of the basics about what changes are taking place:

  • New height - 900mm
  • Weighs less - at 61lbs it will be 11lbs less than the 1080
  • The bore size and offset on the perforated top will not change so your existing MFT accessories will work
  • New V-Groove profile for adapting future accessories
  • Optional support cross members will be available for additional stability

That is all of the information I have to release at this time.  I assure you that I will get you more information including photographs as soon as possible.

Shane

Shane,

You mentioned a new v-groove profile for future accessories. Do you know if it'll still take our exisiting clamps? Will there still be the "square" slot that so many folks have used for fixtures they've created and added?

Mike

Mike,

I meant to include that in my previous post.  Your existing clamps and accessories will work with the MFT3.

Shane

Thanks Shane. Since you're starting to get info, is there any indication of when there will be a prototype?

Mike

Thanks Shane!
I didn't see 'adjustable height' on your list.  Did that turn out to be just a rumor?

I have no other details to share right now other than those listed in my previous posts.  Trust that I will get you guys information as soon as possible.  By sharing the information I have, I hoped to dampen the speculation and assumptions being made.

Thanks for everyone's questions regarding the MFT3.  I hope to address them all in the near future.

Shane

Hello Shane / Matthew
This is my first post on the forum.... so be gentle with me

I was just about to buy a MFT1080 but maybe having second thoughts if there is going to be a 'better' version released soon.
So my questions are:
Will it be released on this side of the 'pond' first? (I live in Oxford, UK)
Will it be the same size as the current models?
What are these new accessories which will fit into the Vee-shaped groove?

gasman,

I suggest that you contact Festool UK for information regarding the potential for new products released in your country, the time frame for those releases and specifications.  I can only provide information regarding the U.S. release and have given as many details as possible for the time being.

Thanks,
Shane

For me it is good news that a new version of the MFT will be available in the near future. I was thinking to buy a MFT but now I have to wait for the MFT3. Another good thing is the height of the MFT3, it is the same height as my CMS table.
At first I was puzzled about the new name, MFT3. Was there ever a MFT2? Or is this the 3rd table after the MFT800 and MFT1080?

Shane, thank you for that little tidbit of info re: the MT3. With that, you've answered about 90% of the questions that have been asked.

V-shaped grooves?  Are they supposed to create self-aligning or self-centering of new accessories?  Or to facilitate locking of accessories in position due to a wedging action, thus reducing the clamp force that is required?

Hi Wim,

Way back in the 90's (when Festool was Festo, and green was blue) there was the FST660/85.  It looked a bit like an MFT800--alumin(i)um extrusion frame, MDF center, hinged guide rail--but Festool hadn't invented holes in the top yet.  I think this would qualify as the MFT1.

I, too, am waiting now.

Anyone got a pic of this?

Seth

I have emailed Festool in Australia via the website to ask when it would be launched here so it will be interesting to see what the response is.

I've got one of these at home (without the legs), hanging between two Basis tables. It makes a good workbench, if a tad small. But anything larger wouldn't fit in my 2x3m shed anyway. The top is the same size as the MFT 800, so I do have one with holes in it (on both sides, Eli).
The legs were called FST-TG. Don't know what that stands for.

Wow! That last post was like the time I discovered the magazine in my cousin's closet that had all the girls in crotchless bellbottoms on orange shag carpet. Flashback!

I am wondering if those V-grooves mean the use of those tiny little V-slot nuts that are used with the MFS.  If so, I hope that there will be plenty of them available.  Those things are so easy to drop.  Once they find their way thru the holes in the top, Eli's suggestion for reversability becomes a lot more serious in thought.
