I agree with that. The other thing I'd like to have is for the rail and fence mount mechanisms to be quick release. That is, pull a lever and everything that sticks above the table surface pops off. Snap it back on and it is ready to go and still square.
I want to make a large MFT to replace my current assembly table which is a little over 3'x6'. I use the assembly table as a cutting table with a foam panel to size 4x8 sheet goods down with my larger rails. One of the reasons I haven't made the step to make the larger MFT is that I can see switching between the foam top and using the MFT rails often (especially since larger table would make the cutting capacity of the MFT larger than my TS crosscut sled). The hassle of removing the fence and rails, then reinstalling and resquaring makes that too much effort. The only other place the large MFT would fit would be as the outfeed of my TS. Same hassle there when I use the TS. So, for now my MFT sits jammed in a corner as the bastard stepchild of my shop. It gets pulled out occasionally, but it would be a staple (and the larger MFT would already be in place) if it was easier to reconfigure. I often think about using the MFT for things then come up with a different way to do it so I won't have to hassle with the removal and reinstallation/resquaring of the fence and rail. I estimate it takes around 3-5 minutes to do all that and I can often find a way to do something elsewhere with that amount of time. Since my MFT spends a signficant percentage of it's time as junk storage, the time to get it out is even longer as I have to clean it off. If Festool can hit under 30 seconds to remove and/or reinstall the fence/rail with no resquaring necessary, I might have to upgrade. Otherwise, I will make some sort of larger "multi-function table", but I doubt it will contain much of the Festool hardware. As it is, I'll probably fold up the MFT soon to make room for my new neander workbench. We'll see if I wind up missing it.
