I added a router insert to my MFT 3 a while back.  It works great, but I wonder if there is any way to finish the top and make it a bit more slippery for router use, but not so slippery that crosscutting will be compromised.  Thought I'd ask the forum.  Has anyone experimented with applying a finish to the top?  Any thoughts?

Thanks .  My previous post didn't work so I hope this doesn't double post

Wax would work.  If you decide to seal and finish it I would make sure you took the top off and sealed the bottom as well.

Did you add any stiffeners under the MFT to keep it from sagging?

At one of the training sessions in Lebanon, another participant recommended using Shellac.  I lightly coated my table which results in a nice smooth surface with a bit more slip.  It had the added advantage of protection when I inadvertantly sprayed water on the surface.  The holes are only very slightly impacted with no trouble in inserting dogs, etc.

Kevin,
Yes... here is the photo of the base without the top.  Notice the center divider extends up to the underside of the top. This divider is attached with pocket screws to the top and sits in between a column of holes so I don't lose much clamping flexibility. There is zero sag unless I really push down on the top.

Davee,
Thanks for the reminder about finishing the underside.  Not sure if MDF if affected by seasonal moisture here in Seattle, but it can't hurt to do so.  Was thinking maybe a coat or two of "SealCoat".  Could always wax it after...
