MFT3 – VL custom insert for INCRA Masterlift II

After adding a miter slot to the VL sliding table I have decided to adapt the PS jig saw plate to take the INCRA Masterlift II.

The CMS insert plates are 4.5mm thick and rather light weight for supporting a 7.5 kilo router without risk of deflection. As an alternative my plan is to make a removable cradle from RHS sections and key it  into the side channels of the VL. This way the complete weight of the router rests on the VL frame with the cut out in the top plate holding the router plate in position.

My first task is to rout/mill the opening in the PS top plate, I have the INCRA routing template and plan to use the OF1400 to mill the cut out. My question is does anyone have any experience or suggestions for milling aluminium that will ensure an accurate clean result, e.g. what type of cutter, bit sizes, guide bushes and methodology etc. It would be an expensive mistake if I got this part wrong!

I am sorry that nobody was able to provide you with any advice but your own solution is brilliant - an excellent bit of work.

What fence and dust collection have you in mind?

Peter

Nice build!

What cutter did you use? I know you asked the same question, but seeing the result i guess you figured it out.

Why did you choose the Masterlift? A Trion TRA001 or MOF001 (with built in router lift) is cheaper and you don't have to take it out of the Masterlift when you ant to use the Festool OF1400 free hand.

Hi Luuk I used a 5mm Festool cutter with the OF1400, I screwed the CMS plate to the INCRA template and the template to the bench so nothing could move. The key to getting a clean cut is to make 0.1mm passes on the slowest router speed. The Jessem router lift fits many of the popular fixed based routers and gives me the option to upgrade to something more powerful in the future.
Will send you a PM re positioner limits.

Ehm, i don't know where www.bannedlink.com comes from, but it should be:http://www.gereedschappro.nl/nieuws...ra-ls-positioner-miterslider-en-freeslift/181

It is in Dutch, but you cab use Google Translate. Halve way the page on the right side is de PDF with the materials and parts that is used (under Downloads).

For those who don't understand what we are talking about: msnelling and I had are talking about (t)his project and mine in this topic and through PM's....

Hi Luuk www.bannedsite.com in your link comes back as an error, is this the translation site or a link to the original article? Here's a quick sketch based on your original

The banned link in the url is a Dutch webshop (a good one, too!). Just replace the first part of the url with
gereedschappro [dot] nl

Luuk/Burt what can I say .... absolutely impressive!! not least of all the translation ...

I will order the same components with additional ones to accommodate the VL... many thanks ....

Sorry, I didn't realise that FOG changed the URL's, but luckily Bert helped out. GereedschapPro [dot] NL is the right website. And, as Bert also mentioned, this is a good shop if you are looking for tools.

Feel Free to pm me if you have any more questions.

Oh, as for your design:
- wheels on the middle legs, but not on the sides doesn't work.
- the 80/20 (or 40 x 40 mm) profile is strong enough to span the whole length, so you don't need the legs in the middle.

This is an earlier design, which i discarded because it was too expensive:
