Michael Graves and Design

I have always been a fan of Michael Graves architecture and industrial design so I thought I would share this little interview with him from Dwell magazine at his home in Princeton, New Jersey. He was paralyzed from the waist down from a stroke in 2003 and has designed his home to accommodate his wheel chair.

Quite touching.

My dad suffered a massive stroke just over a year ago and my wife's father a few months after that. You don't realize just he dramatic they can be till it's close to you.

Michael Graves appears to be a very determined man!

I was first introduced to Graves design through the Portland Building in Oregon. Like the Sony Building (formerly AT&T building) in NY designed by Philip Johnson, I really like the "wit, ornament and reference to Neoclassicism" in postmodern architecture.
Because of his oeuvre, I actually thought there were two Michael Graves. His product designs and collaboration with Alessi and Target are fascinating.
I really think the design of his house transcends his physical condition, which I believe by definition is what all good design should aspire to. Again, totally subjective but that's design.

There are some more pictures of his home The Warehouseon his site. I find that the way he frames the spaces, doorways and the use of alcoves and bump out in his home to be quite beautiful. Both modern and classical. I find that, that library or, I should say the space is absolutely stunning.
