Midi and ts55. Static

Hi folks,  just joined and loving the site and enjoying my new kit. However after fitting out a kitchen, Worktops, panels, plinths etc. every time I used the saw I'd get a nasty static shock as I shut the saw off. I'm sure after watching several YouTube clip they claimed to be anti static. Am I doing something wrong? I was using the saw outside. Plunged into an extension cord that was fully unwound

Thanks guys.

James

Picking Domino 500 next week, can't wait!

I've been getting the exact same thing with my new midi and ts55r. Never got a single shock with my old midi and ts55 in 6 years I had them.

I've contacted festool to see what's up will let you know how it goes

This has been mentioned by several people in relation to the new TS55. Unless I've missed it there hasn't been an answer. That said, I've not had any shocks off of mine recently - perhaps once things have worn in the problem goes away.

Hi,

This is my first post. I own neither of these products but after looking into some literature on them I discovered that:

1) The TS55 is double insulated, meaning there is no ground on the plug and the tool should be well insulated against electrical shock.
2) The Midi dust extractor is not double insulated and requires a ground to prevent electrical shock.

It only makes sense that the dust extractor needs to be grounded because that's how it dissipates the static charges developed on the hose. In fact, the manual directly states this:
"The antistatic system (AS)
The friction of material running through the suc-
tion hose causes electrostatic charges, which
can result in unpleasant electric shocks for the
operator.
In order to prevent this, this dust extractor has an
integrated antistatic system which conducts these
static charges to ground. This requires the use of
antistatic hoses and accessories."

I'm no expert but I have a suggestion. Try running the saw without the vacuum, if you don't get any shocks then investigate your grounding issue. Verify the ground prong of your extension cord has continuity with an ohm meter/multimeter. If your extension cord is fine, then verify the outlets you're using are properly grounded (hire someone if you don't know how).

Hopefully this helps.

Festool are sending an end user guy to check mine out. My one is 110v and as far as I know it's earthed but I've not checked anything I will leave that to them

Spoke to festool guy and we are going to meet up at some point and try something to try and cure the static issue. Will post back when I have news.

Did anybody ever find a cause/solution to this? Ive just got my 1st TS55 and am having the same problem from day 1?

I'm getting the same problem and so is a colleague of mine. Sounds as though this is affecting quite a number of us! Let's hope for a solution :)

I had that problem festool sent me a new dust port for the saw and magic it stopped it. Something to do with the type of plastic they used on a batch of dust ports. It easy to change too 5 screws , take side plate off hope you get it sorted luke

+1 for what Luke said I had mine changed too and there's no static problem now. I did find that the hose end wasn't screwed on properly too. I'm sure it was the plastic dust port though as others have had theirs changed too.

This issue seems to be isolated to the UK. I have read about a couple of other instances. I would recommend contacting Festool UK service for assistance.

Sorry to bring up this thread but I only started use my midi and ts55 today  some mdf units and any time my hand touched the metal of the saw I was getting shocks to I rang tts today but the girl said the same thing it needs a new dust port [blink]  and the she says you will have let us pick it up  [crying] I started to use  it  and I need nearly every day now  why can't it be sent out it doesn't look like the hardest thing to change

i recieved my new dust port in the post the other day. you should have insisted they sent it if you need it. I havent had a chance to see if it makes a difference yet but am hopefull.

I had a rep visit and he fitted it for me months back, but I was a guinea pig really to test out .

I noticed this very issue with my new TS55R this weekend whereas my old TS55 didn't do this. This is about the third problem I'm seeing with the R that I didn't see on my old 55. Not very happy at this point :(

I would suggest that you contact Festool USA if you are experiencing shocks from your TS.

I realise this is an old board but I thought it worth mentioning that the issue is apparently still ongoing. I used these forums a lot to help me decide which tools to get as a start up kit.

The ts55r seemed like a no brainer and to be fair, what a well designed and amazing piece of kit it is...providing the sporadic bursts of electrical current surging through your body is something you can ignore!

I personally find it irritating at best and damn dangerous at worst. A blade spinning at however many rpm next to someone who's twitching like some sort of Tourette's sufferer can't be safe.

Anyway, I contacted the supplier who advised me that I should change my trestles (standard heavy duty plastic ones as I find are common enough in the trade that I should have thought a modern tool shouldn't be rendered unsafe to use near them). Or to avoid cutting on MDF. ?! Really?!

So in the 21st century, as a kitchen fitter with a small van, I can't use fold up plastic trestles or MDF without having my £400 saw combined with my £90 as hose and my £550 extractor giving me electric shocks. May as well quit my job then! Or simply use my £89 Hitachi circular saw which gives an "ok" cut but at least doesn't wish to kill me!

Anyway. My supplier also advised me to contact Phil from technical whom I have PM'd on here but have yet to have a response.

Surely if this hose connector thing solves what is clearly a known problem (however rare), why don't they just send them out to those who do have problems without all this hullabaloo.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm actually really happy with all my festool stuff. I have a Kapex with all the stand and wings, a cxs, a c15, a centrotec assembly package, a ctl 26 and the ts55r with rails and clamps. Everything does exactly what I want it to do. I just hope that this exemplary customer service I hear so much about ends up solving the one issue I have.

Is anyone else still having this problem?

  Hi Tom
Hadn't forgotten and i heard about the call to us from the dealer. I have sent a P.M to you on the static issue
  rg
Phil

Cheers,

I hope my post is all taken in good humour by anyone reading. It is obviously an issue which needs addressing but I am not one of those who throws a tantrum at the slightest problem. My lack of any prospect of a solution from my dealer was more of a concern to me.

Phil has given me a more considered response for which I'm very grateful and I would certainly advise anyone looking to get a ts55 not to be at all put off by any posts here. Maybe they're not for everyone but they are unmistakably first class tools which provide high quality results.

The odd bad batch is not a cause to look elsewhere as far as I'm concerned.
