Mitered Frame Using Festool MFT And The Domino DF500 (Contest Entry)

This is a video for the contest to demonstrate the accuracy of the Festool MFT top and how to make a perfect miter joint using the hole pattern. The frame is joined together using the Domino DF 500, and it’s perfect to hold these joints together. Sorry for the background noise! It’s like 5 degrees here today and my furnace (located in my shop) is going full blast.

Nice video. Of course the fence and stop would do the same task as the dogs and jig. But it does make me think it would be neat to have a reference for common angles based on the MFT grid.

Excellent idea -- making the stop block with 45 degree cut.  I just bought a TS 55 REQ, and made my own super-sized MFT.  I do not have the accessories that come with the MFT -- instead I have the Qwas rail and bench dogs (plus some of the new Parf Dogs from Lee Valley).  I have everything I need to make frames like you have done except for the Domino (which went onto my wish list right after I got the track saw). A friend of my wife wants me to make a large mirror frame for her, and your video convinced me that this is a great way to make picture frames.  And I showed the video to my wife, too.   [smile]

We are both close to retirement, so spending money on shop tools has not been an issue.  But it is always a good idea to demonstrate why I would spend another $900 for something so little! (Plus a little more for the accessory kit.)

Thanks for all the compliments! I hope it gives everyone who sees it ideas on how to use their tools in a way that fits their needs.

Shane - If I could have used the fence and protractor head I would have. Unfortunately I don't have one. If you look at this post http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-jigs-tool-enhancements/custom-mfttable-saw-extension-table/ it goes over the details of my MFT extension table. There is a lot of Festool in it, however there is a lot of shop made things also. Since I don't have the fence and protractor, I use the holes quite a bit in the MFT top help me with the angles. I would like to see also if anyone does have some type of chart that has the angles created by using the holes in different combinations. Has anyone ever seen one of these?

Just an update... did some quick trigonometry and found there are no other exact angles that can be produced with the grid pattern. Only fractional angles. Bummer.

Steve Adams and I played with that a few years ago -- 45 is about the only useful angle that can be derived.  [sad]

"Sine" bars have been around for decades however you really don't need to use any MFT holes for those precise angles.
