My next project will be a mitre saw station

Would like your thoughts on position of the saw on the bench. I will have a bench length of 2930mm and the left hand end will abut a door which can be opened

The right hand end will pass behind my sys ports

I am right handed if that makes any difference.

Any ideas will be appreciated

?Have you seen [member=11196]Peter Parfitt[/member] video on Kapex station?

I modeled mine on his, but went a different direction with the collapsible extensions.

EDIT: My apologies, just realized you're working with a fixed bench of significant length.  In that case, check out the amazing station built by [member=41244]Iceclimber[/member] :

Ok here goes.

Try to picture what I'm saying here because I haven't built mine yet and it's a bit difficult to explain... I'm planning on building a mitre saw station with a solid base that houses a Sysport style system. On top of this sits 5 x 600mm modules that slide/sit on a hardwood runners/rebates.

The centre module will carry the saw and the two each side will be the side/support tables. However if I need to cut longer stock I can remove one or both of the modules on each side and slide the saw along and position the removed module in the gap left by the saw.

Hope this makes sense. If not I'll try to knock up a quick sketch.

Thanks

[member=60286]bobfog[/member] I get your idea that could work for me but i was looking for just a straight bench

And I didn't really want a mobile one as I have a couple of appliances under the top that can't be moved

Just to clarify then, are you trying to determine the balance between the left and right side clearance?

I would bias as much as possible to maximizing left side clearance, that way you could have a fixed fence or set of stops to thereby maximize length of repeat cutting capability. If you position saw in middle, you lose some of that.

I've not started my own version yet, but it is designed and the position is known.

I'm right handed and have mine positioned off centre with the greatest surface area to the left. To the left, I have about 4500mm before I hit a door that can be opened. To the right, I have about 1500mm before the garage door that can also be opened.

The attached drawing was for something else, so I've coloured in a KAPEX and some lengths of wood for your pleasure...

The attached photo (excuse the mess, moving some things around at the moment) shows where the KAPEX logically sits in the drawing and where it will live permanently under the finished cupboards when I eventually build that unit.

Hope this helps in some way. Works for me. Rarely open the garage door and if needed, I'd just move the KAPEX somewhere else if it didn't work on the eventual permanent station.
