Very interesting Dave.  The multi-tools have always fascinated & appealed to me however not being a contractor or installer I just can't justify a purpose for buying one... HELP  [wink]

FYI, I just heard from Dave. He and his family are without power and don't expect to have it restored until late int he week. So, I wouldn't expect him on the forum to answer questions or post videos in the next few days. Let's hope that those affected by Irene get back to life-as-usual soon.

Good work on the test and very nice video editing.  Speeding up the video for the nail cutting gives us the assurance of how the test was completed without spending a lot of time on the time-consuming cutting stuff.  VERY nice work!

nov 2011 fine homebuilding  reviewed serveral blades also. Never used mine to cut big nails tho.      [eek]  good job Dave

Well wa speed do u run yours at then?   Im always Max speed and I assume Dave was and many people who use a Fein!  So if you have discovered something let us know the most efficient speed for longer lifer blades!!!

i find this a completly pointless task. Test them cutting wood the thing they will get used on alot more maybe put the odd nail in just for real life senario

Poo head!  Its a good test! If your going to cut a lot of nails  like removing old timber studding or floor joists were you would just cut the nails then its a good test to show you which blade to buy! A reciprocator cant always get in everywhere.   I dont know if this theory works BUT BUT if it can cut more nails im sure its going to cut more wood!

I used the fien on max speed, I usually always use it maxed out. As for the blades, I use them especially when I'm cutting wood that I'm unsure if there is a nail.  I still prefer a nice wide cut blade for most of my tasks and the titanium imperial blades are wider then most of the bimetal blades out there.

I would like the hear your theory on tool speed and blade life.

Dave, lowering the speed reduces the heat buildup making the blade last longer.(IE if the wood is smoking or the blade is turning blue you are running too fast)

Also using a sawing motion helps clear any buildup in the teeth and distributes the wear more evenly across the width of the blade.

Love my multimaster found that faster and more efficient are not always the same thing

I have the coated blade you are testing and they work great and really do last much longer

That makes sense. I do find myself doing the sawing action while using the multitool. I will have to try running it slower and see how it works.

Yes. I've only used 2 brands in my Multimaster - Fein and Imperial.

I won't waste any more money on Imperial blades.  My experience mirrors the article with those 2 brands.

The imperial blades don't even do a good job on drywall!

Tim, I'm willing to bet you had a defective blade or the incorrect blade for the application at hand.  In our experience, Imperial blades are comparable to Fein at usually around a 30% savings or so.  The new Storm blades that were demo'd in Dave's video are around the same price as the most popular Fein plunge cut blades but at a huge increase in productivity and quality.

You have to buy an adapter for those though dont you ?

Yes, then just replace the blade when eventually it needs changing. I am still on the adaptor I got 16 months ago.
I have seen quite a few other brands with failed spot welds gone in that time.
