My Big Fat Kitchen Pantry

This week I started a pantry for my wife because it's time to replace our older, crumbling  kitchen that I installed 20 years ago.

This pantry is 7'9" tall and 50" wide, will have four drawers on the left bottom and two slideout pantry's on the right bottom.  The center shelf will remain open, and the top 1/3rd will be shelves.

Because of the height, (kitchen ceiling is 7'10") my wife and I assembled one side with the bottom and the 3 shelves, then tipped it up and fastened the other side, then the top, then the face frame.  The face frame is held on with 96 pocket screws and no glue since I attached it vertically.  It's book matched cherry ply with a matching face frame and will have raised panel doors and drawer fronts.

At this point I have all the drawer slides installed.  The easiest part, making the drawers has suddenly become a huge hassle, I'm having problems getting the *%$#&# things square!    >:(ARRRGH! >:(

I'll get that sorted out tomorrow, I hope to have it all done and installed (with the exception of the raised panels by Sunday evening.

Festools used, a pretty short list, TS55 and 1400 rail to x-cut the shelves, 1400 rail and a big DeWalt router cut the dados in the sides for the shelves.  I sanded the faceframe with my ETS 125, wow it did a nice job there.

I also used a Kreg pocket hole jig, as you can probably see a bunch of the unfilled holes.  Wow, what a great tool that is!

Hopefully my picture will attach and you can see my young apprentice attempting a lobotomy on me!

Looks like you guys had a good time. Best kind of job. ;D ;D

It is, my daughter is constantly underfoot with these projects, always wants to help and I really appreciate it, since my 19 YO son never, ever had an interest.

Steveo, your very pretty helper was wielding that instrument like a pro.  :o What a great time to be able to do it with the family. I truly hope it was as much fun as it appears in the pics. Good job. Fred

lookin' good! That is a ton of pocket holes.  Are they hidden or are you going to have to plug those?

I'm going to plug them and use Titebond trim glue.  The cherry veneer is super thin, so any sanding has to be old school hand power and not much of it.

The rest of the cabinets will have FF glued on, so I won't need half of what I've used here.

The pantry's in place now.  Yesterday I ran a duplex receptical right into the back of the pantry and drilled a hole in the side, placed a gromet there so I can run power out for the fridge.  It's in the old  part of the house, so the electric is always something of an adventure.  I discovered that my HVAC guy put this circuit in backwards when he redid my old 4 fuse "main" box and seven sub boxes.  I'd run a new circuit myself, but I'm out of open slots in the panel.

I need to rewire that whole part of the house anyway, but thats another project for another time.  And another blog!  ;)

Tomorrow I plan on glueing the cherry together for the drawer fronts and doors.  But I need to make the top shelves first and get the rest of the trim done, that will keep my wife happy.

Gotta keep my priorities!  ;D
