My CT 33 turned off for the first time, I guess it is to hot?

I have had it almost 3 years and have run it hours on end with never an issue. Today after 30 minutes of use it turned off. I turn it off and on and it goes on again for about 3 minutes. Now I have just left it as is and it seems it is not going to just cool down and turn on itself again without me turning it off and on by the switch, which I can't do right now. My room is filling up with dust and this stinks! I guess after this run I will try my other CT33 or one of my Fein's. I never had a Fein ever turn off like this and have been using them almost 10 years.

Please comment and give a solution or discuss similar issues other than just getting hot.

I would recommend that you call the service department, the number is below in my signature.  There is thermal protection on the CTs that prevent overheating.  They can help diagnose and resolve the issue.  As I understand it, it would almost need to be a blockage in the vents used for cooling the motor to cause overheating.  But the service department is best prepared to assist you.

Heck I never had a tool from Festool yet that I had to call on, send for service or return. I am not bothering them until I am positive its not me. I never call service dept unless it is my last recourse. I thought maybe someone had ideas.

I'll check for blockage, that may could be it. I was thinking this hose was a bit long for this application and it does have two loops.

I will find out after this run and check out the hose, thanks.

In speaking to our Service Department Manager, here's the advice:

- Check for a full bag, the most obvious thing
- If you've been sanding something like poly, it can potentially line the inside of the bag and restrict air flow, give the bag a good shake or try a new bag
- Check the hose for a blockage
- If it's none of those things, it may be a faulty thermal sensor which would need to be replaced

My comment about the cooling vents was incorrect, the issues above could also potentially cause overheating.

Good luck, please report back once it gets resolved so others can benefit.  Remember, we're here if you need assistance.

Thanks,
Shane

Well that was easy, no blocked hose, but as usual the bag is filled like a brick, but this time I guess it just ran to long after it was packed that tight! I can't get the darn bag out of the vac! Man I produced dust fast on this project and filled the empty bag to brick form in less than 60 minutes of work time.

I am sure once I get this bag out the problem is solved. I just can't believe this bag filled up that fast. I need a full bag indicator on these CT33's. I am going to get two CT36 when they come out, but these 33's have many years left so I will have to figure something out.

I think I will start a thread on ideas for implementing a full bag indicator for the existing festool vacs.

Is there any interest in that or anyone have any ideas? Hose or internal vac or bag pressure, bag volume, sound level or heat are a few things maybe we can use to get a full bag indicator to work.

Nickao-
when wearing ear defenders in the workshop one can miss the change in sound when a bag gets chocker! It kinda sneaks up on you ;D

Glad to hear it is resolved.

Nickao,

It's been awhile since we talked on the FOG.  Since then I have installed 3 Dust Deputy's and haven't had a single problem.  In fact I haven't changed a bag in a year.  I do believe it is possible to have a bag get sealed with the finest dust even though its not filled, but that hasn't happened to me yet.  I use the old style Dust Deputy and you can see the Bucket filling up.  The last one I bought I got at Rockler with 20% off or $80.00.  With shipping it was 100.00.  I even installed a 4 inch port on the bottom side of one of them so when its time to empty, I just open the port and its sucked into my large cyclone.  Much quicker and dustless to empty.  I plan on doing the same with the other two set ups but haven't got around to it.  \

Also, glad to see you back!

I have two of the metal canister dust deputy, but for this application I just can't use them right now.

This set up will get connected to the large shop Cyclone as soon as I get everything worked out.  I stole the office in my house and emptied the room for two machines, ran out of room in the 3 car garage and as you know cars have not seen my garages in 7 years.
I have to get the duct work in here from the mudroom I stole for the cyclone, hehe.  :)

Nice not having the cylcone in the shop areas, my wife is a bit pissed I tore out a 9x6 pantry and stole that for my shop as well.

When you reinstall your new bag, don't forget to remove the filters and give them a quick vac too.  Most likely if your bag was a brick, you'll have some debris up in the filters as well.

I remember a while back someone on the FOG made a great post with pictures of 'what not to do'...
