My First Roof Build...

Nice little roof project!! yes the birds mouth cuts are on the deep side and the wallplate should be on its edge when doubled not flat on top the way you have it. this is just so it doesnt sag over your door ope over time.
Just like when you would do a double joist for example!

Glad you used treated timbers too [wink]

Also I know itsa prefab shed but on normal domestic roofs I always wrap the bottom of my wallplates in DPC before I bed them (not really needed here)

wall plate rotting is a major factor to the lifespan of a "Cut" roof.
I love cutting roofs, its one of the real advantages of being a chippy! I know a lot of roofs now are truss or part truss which is a pity (Blame Trada!). Have a six dormer cut roof coming up soon so excited about it!
Jees I need to get out more.......
You did a nice job for your mate, well done. Hope you get a chance to do more.

Love cut roofs. Hate trusses, especially trusses with dormers etc as you end up with 50% truss 50% cut. Stupid. Real sense of achivement doing them especially more complicated stuff

Jons was a prime example when using shitty trusses with 5 dormers  which actually created more work for me and Dean then if we had done it traditionally.    Not only that truss are often poorly made I really hate trusses.

If you want an non perfect roof and a up and down ceiling buy trusses!

Haha

Very true at times I think who ever makes them just throw the parts down and fix where they land. Sadly there will be a lot of joiners that never have done cut roofs since college

Worse than that...... there are many so called roof framers who don't know how to cut a roof from scratch.
I blame the college/training system for splitting up our craft into ever smaller "specialised" sections.
My apprenticeship covered carpentry, joinery and wood machining so I can drop into any job including as a shuttering carpenter and get on with it. Most people on here who have seen my posts might think I specialise in staircases and handrails but they are just the more interesting aspects of my career.  except the part where I built the mould for and laid up then fitted out a 50 foot cruising barge in GRP, all because of the training I had had and working with some really talented guys over the years each of whom opened my eyes to other aspects of playing with bits of wood.
I wish every woodworkers journey had some of those opportunities married with the will to learn from anyone, regardless of age, something new.
Good grief I've gone on a mini lecture there [unsure] sorry about that.

JRB for a first cut roof and for it's use I see nowt wrong based on what you wrote and the pics, if you get something more "building control" or awkward you can always PM me for advice should you feel the need, if I can help I will.
