I have been doing carpentry for about 6 years now, woodworking for the past year. In that time I have acquired a pile of systainers filled with German goodness and finally decided to bight the bullet and upgrade my miter saw to a Kapex. I bought it on Amazon, same place I get all my tools, no taxes and free shipping in 2 days (love that Prime). I have bought through Amazon from CPO, Beaver and Acme all with great results, I saw Amazon itself (its warehouse deals) was priced 100 less then everyone else in a new but open box. Seeing that now is the time when Festool is doing their open box sale I figured the 2 some how coincided and I snatched it up and used that 100 in savings to buy more stuff.

Much to my joy the package was delivered today to my home. Unfortunately I was not there to sign it, my dad who works in the area did. This is what I came home to.

I didn't pull that top open it came like that, lucky for me Amazon has a good return policy. I already have my return label printed (for free) and will take it to the ups store tomorrow. I am going to fill it up with packing peanuts so they can clean up the mess when they get it.

Lessons learned : pay full price. Fed ex sucks.

Now I have to wait till next week to have fun with my new tool. I hope you can see the images, I cannot in my preview.

DANG!  [eek]

Should have refused delivery, but at least the return is easy. I wish you better luck on the next one.

Amazon is wonderful on customer service and I fully expect they will take care of you. It's a shame a beautiful tool was subjected to this level of abuse. The box looks like it was tossed out of the truck as it drove by your house.

I had a 1/4" steel leg set arrive bent up in shipping. Amazon air shipped a replacement. I imagine Amazon has a lot of pull with UPS and Fedx.

Is this an example of delivery by drone?  Looks like it was dropped from 2000 ft.!

I think the person who signed for it has some blame here. Luckily Amazon has such a great return policy that family arguments need not take place for this.
Boy, they really did mean "open box"...

I have experienced that kind of damage frequently with the brown-suited package smashers, but I can honestly say I've never experienced it withFedEx. I'm sure it just depends on circumstances and the driver.

I received my Kapex shipped from Indiana, and it arrived double-boxed and in perfect shape. It looks like Amazon removed the outer box for some reason, and shipped it with just the 'display' packaging. Yes, Amazon will take care of you... but it's a bummer none-the-less.

Hopefully your replacement will arrive in much better shape?!

Order from a Festool dealer.  My stuff arrives heavily protected. Hardest part is disposing of all the cardboard and bubble wrap. My dealer (Bob Marino) offers free shipping. These tools are expensive; they should be packaged to reflect that.

I Like amazon but only for small stuff, nothing wrong with them but fedex and ups are just horrible where I live, for the big ( heavy or that looks like it could be damaged in shipping) festool purchases I wait for the weekend and pick it up at woodcraft or tool nut, I like my tools with a side of knowledge. :)

Best of luck with the replacement..

Just a tip if you're ordering something like this from Amazon Prime:

Pay the extra for overnight service!

The product is handled much more delicately, and it's touched far fewer times than a package that goes via ground. When I ordered my 96" holey rail I did just that, and not only did I have it the next day but it arrived in PERFECT shape!

Not always an option, even for PRIME members. But, if it is available, especially for something large and heavy, a good idea to spend a few extra bucks!

My Fedex driver always says (when I tell him about all the items I received from them that are damaged on arrival) "we don't package, we just deliver". I had one Festool item delivered by them recently that was trashed on arrival so that went back and its replacement was also trashed, followed by its replacement.

I'm cautious about what I buy through Amazon. Turning point for me was ordering several "coffee table" books (Fender history, etc) and having them arrived trashed. When it happened it wasn't worth my time to resolve it, but the quality of packaging and lack of care have stuck and my opinion of Amazon is very low.

Having a great return policy to me is not "the solution" - do the job right in the beginning would resonate better with me.

This ^

There is a reason that Amazon are good at taking stuff back, they have honed this process to perfection because they do it a lot.

I have had several items sent by Bob Marino.  I don't think the UPS or Fedx guys could have damaged the items if they ran a contest to destroy.  If I don't get it from Bob, I have two locals within an hour, either way and in opposite directions, Woodcraft in Norwalk and Tool Nut who take pride in what they sell. If I can't get my large toys from either of them, I guess I really don't need them.

Yea UPS does that to my packages here, FedEx does not. Case in point. I had wood craft and my med stainer set to be delivered the same day.. FexEx ground "med stainer" was here at 834 AM  all corners there and gently placed on my front porch " I watched the delivery guy" UPS on the other hand Delivered the Woodcraft box with a hole in it! The guy was appalled when I said I am not taking delivery of it until I open the box. I watched him roll this box up to my door.

Mustangpwr,

I believe your shipment was actually delivered by Bob Marino's evil doppelgänger... Mob Barino.  I have seen him work for Amazon, UPS, USPS, FedEx and a bunch of other companies.  He likes to go in and do the opposite of his doppelgänger.  Watch out for him as he is very sneaky in other ways.  Usually, he will take all the packing foam and bubble wrap OFF of packaging before shipping.

I am almost certain that he takes it... packages it up... and sends it to his much nicer doppelgänger Bob.  But the jokes on him as Bob just uses every last bit of it!

[big grin] [big grin]

Hope it all checks out/works out mate... my heart would drop if i came home to that after feeling elation for 2 days waiting for it!

cheers.  Bryan.

Guaranteed you wood never see packaging like that from "Uncle" Bob.

It seems that in general Amazon (or some Amazon sellers?) have problems packing larger and / or heavier stuff. I think as far as the FedEx / UPS debate goes ......... there are a lot of factors. I have not had any beaten up package problems with either one in particular. Yes, I have received bashed up boxes etc. But with no particular UPS or FedEx connection.

Any thing I have ordered from Bob Marino came with so much bubble wrap that it almost fills the trash by itself. While it takes more than 2 days, there was no shipping or sales tax. But best of all neither the shipping container nor the product was destroyed.
