Well it arrived yesterday and I got to play with it a little bit today

Kapex%20early%20setup.JPG

On the floor is the now retired Elu SCMS that has been heavily used for the last 14 years and never broke down!
I needed to run a mould on the lower edge of the outer stair string so decided to put the new extensions on the
CMS with OF2200 installed, excellent support for the long string as proved below,

UG%20Fences%20on%20CMS.JPG

Bit out of focus due to haste, but you get the idea.

I did put them on the Kapex later as I need to trim the newel posts to final length, they are 94x94mm so some careful work left a tad to be cut by hand with my Veritas flush saw to complete the cut. The continuous supprt by the extensions was really helpful.

Also set up the MFT with a jig to use the TS55 to cut the wedges for the stair, I normally do them on a bandsaw but until we get in the new 'shop I don't have one.

Jig firmly secured, and a Stop on the guide rail so the jig's leg does not get cut right thru'...

If the sticky out bit to the right of the rail/saw cut was cut off I would lose some support for the timber being cut.
The jig bit is 25mm MDF and the two offcuts of pine are from the 32mm strings to add support to the rail.
It worked really well and safely, though not as fast as a bandsaw and similar jig.
All in, I had an enjoyable day playing working and look forward to an early start tomorrow.  [big grin] [big grin]

Heee heee its what I do play!  Thats why I like buying tools its an excuse to play and change the way you do something just because you wanna try the tool out!

I noticed you have the sliding table on your CMS I was thinking of buying it aswell  what do you think of it?! Have you used it much?!

JMB

JMB, I got it when I got the table for the TS55 ( was going to wait and get a table and TS75 for obvious reasons, but a job came up that screamed get one ;D, Just did not have the funds for the TS75 etc.) I have used it along with the router table too works very nicely. The table can be locked off at any point along the slide so comes in useful as a table extension.

Oh! by the way the flag stops on the ug fit the MFT fence so multiple stop positions are now easier with no added costs for extra flag stops. [laughing]
Rob

Cheers!

Have you tried attaching the UG arms on the MFT yet?!?! If so what do you think of it.  Dont know if you read my other topic mentioning how is kinda awkward to attach the arms to the MFT just wondering what you think of it.

nice tool collection [wink]

i so need a kapex stand, neeeeeeeeed [big grin] i was going to cheap out and get a dewalt but you have altered my decision with the full support aspect.

do you think the stand will pull up stairs and wheel back down?

I did read that post but not got round to seeing for myself yet, I do have to get these stairs made so total playtime is curbed somewhat. [laughing] [laughing] [big grin] If I get the stair assembled tomorrow I will have a butchers. [thumbs up]

Don't know, only got it yesterday and not took them home to meet Suzy yet! No stairs at work (except what I make) but loads at home so will soon find out how easy they are to get down 'em if Suzy does does not approve! [eek] [laughing]
Any thoughts JMB?

I have tried it but its quicker to just lift the entire thing and carry it up the stairs and down the stairs its not that heavy really. Its not that easy because you want to go slow because you dont want the bang the thing about do ya lol its your baby. The wheels are to hard  even a little stone about 1 mm big stops you from pulling the kapex along lol trust me its annoying!   It can be done but I dont do it I just did it to try it out to see if it is but unless you have all the time in the world I wouldn't bother.

The solution would be a 3 wheel design if you wanted to pull it up the stairs.

Any way Rob just thought i would let you know!   When I have transported my Kapex on the stand in the Van up right and I got to the job the kapex was at a 6 degree bevel.  Now I thought well thats strange I left it at 0 im sure any way it happened again well I think the kapex is under a little bit of strain.

So what I do now is  when the kapex is folded down in transport mode I release the back leaver for the bevel and let the kapex drop down to its rest position and then lock it back into place.  I just thought I would let you know!  ((( just watch the blade doesnt hit the fence though if you have left your fence right in))

Thanks for the heads up JMB, I hope not to have to move it about too often. I got this version of it, over my original wish for the Kapex/MFT set, because after seeing it at Axy when the rep was there I realised just how useful the extensions would be and moving it from one part of the workshop to another would be easier and faster. The lack of crown stops is not really a big problem as I have been cutting them on the flat for years, but was one of the wants I'd had.

I'm off out to play now! [big grin]

Sorry about the spelling I just read what I put lol its rubbish! Im rubbish at spelling really!

Any way have you had a play with the extensions on the MFT now?!?!?

JMB

Did not get the chance, JMB.
I had to get the stair assembled, and had a design change come in from the architect so got held up.
I did set the extensions so that the scale reads correctly, from the blade cut, as the right hand laser is 1.5mm off to the right! left hand one is spot on.
The extending scales on both sides are plus one mm over what they should be but that error is liveable with as if I forget to allow for it things will be just be a mm bigger.  [wink] Hopefully I will get time to tinker later today.

Heres what I made so far, except for planing and sanding all tools used are Festool's. [big grin]

Nice Rob

I wanna make some stairs one day lol!

Oh I just did a quick Vid! while the kapex was out of my van.

As I said before I transport the kapex like you see in this video.  Its easier to life into and out off the van upright also uses up less ground space in my can BUT I think the driving about going over bumps must put a bit of strain on the kapex and it moves on the bevel.  So as you can see on the video just releasing the lever the kapex drops down naturally in is rest position !Gravity! Thats how I transport it now there is alot less strain on the kapex now. I also zoom into the blade but on the video it looks like the blade is hitting but it actually misses the fence by 1 mm. Thats what you have to look out for if your fence is futher in the blade rests on the fence.

Cheers JMB, will definately remember that when I have to take it to site.
Stairs went out this morning,  [thumbs up] so I have got some space back. Adjusted the right hand laser, now it does not look as bright as before I shall probably fiddle with it again Monday a.m. when it's dark.

I had a go at fitting the extensions on the mft/3 as you said, by golly that's a fiddly exercise! It is do-able but only just as the clamp element will only grip on by a couple of mm so the knob can rotate. Can't see me wanting them attached to the MFT/3 very often which is just as well. Then I went back to work and cut all the parts to length for a bunch of doors and windows, so Monday is going to be a day of setting out and Classic FM.  [smile]

Very nice Rob, new Kapex mmmmm.

Any reason you didn't use the sliding table to cut those wedges?

I would have had to slide both the jig and timber past the saw blade. This is not an issue with a bandsaw as the blade direction is downwards
throughout the cut. On a table saw the timber may get caught by the teeth of the blade as they broach the table. The risk is small but I think having the wedge trapped under the rail (it being most likely to move, flick up) meant I could use one hand on the TS55 and one holding the main body of the workpiece onto the MFT. When the piece got too small I used an offcut to apply pressure, ensuring my digits were a safe distance away...just in case [wink]

JMB, Dean got it.
I use a Mungo Sys 2 for router bits, but it is getting too small, and three Sys 4's for hand tools and some CMS table oddments for safe keeping.
I believe the colour is called Anthracite probably due to the amount of brown coal excavated in Germany! ;D

JMB,

One question, I understand that the kapex and stand have a smaller footprint when standing up, but couldn't you alleviate any undue forces on the kapex by storing/transporting it laying flat?

Thought that might be it.There's a 'wedge cutter' on the mitre gauge of my other tablesaw. It's just a notch cut into the side of the gauge. The wedge is cut off to the left of the blade.Works surprisingly well.
As to the cms mitre/sliding table, I like it so much I end up doing everything with it.Probably just me.....
