My SYS-SFTY - PPE storage and transportation

Hi,

I thought I'd share my SYS-SFTY with you all. Since I was cleaning my stuff today, especially my boots, it was a good timing to take some pictures. I take the whole PPE and safety stuff pretty serious although I'm not really required to do so as a hobbyist. I like the safe feeling, and after a pretty close call years ago while drilling overhead I decided not to skip on it anymore, even with minor tasks.

Basically it's nothing special. Just a SYS-5 and a customized label with help of the Festool PDF template. I attached two versions of the pictogram collage to this thread, both feature the ISO 7010 compliant pictograms - in case anyone likes my idea.

Thank you [member=57586]six-point socket[/member] for getting me to rethink safety.

I'm a hobbyist/homeowner, and do use personal protection, but don't have a hard hat.  I work alone, in my garage workshop, in the house, or in the yard, so haven't seen the need, but maybe I'm missing something.

If anyone has had accidents or near misses in this kind of "calm" environment where they wished they were wearing a hard hat, I'd appreciate hearing about it.  Thanks.

Hi Jim,

Maybe the hard hat needs some deeper explanation as I of course don't wear that every time I do something around the house.

But: Last week I was installing an attic ladder for example. A lot over head work and quite a couple of kilograms over my head when I got the old ladder out and lifted the new attic ladders onto the support beams I installed. Ultimately I wear the hard hat for removing the old frame and the placing of the new frame - once it was screwed into place and the support beams removed I also put away the hard hat.

Then in the final step I had a helper kneeling in the attic to get the springs attached that hold the ladder and lid in place/under tension when closed. As I was holding the lid shut, standing more or less directly beneath it because of space constrictions - I again wear my hard hat.

I also wear it when removing dead branches from trees and stuff like that.

Ultimately every hobbyist needs to decide this on his/her own whether they are going to use a hard hat in their private environment or not and if, for what type of work.

Speaking of me personally again, I got my hard hat when I had a short (couple of years) excursion to the world of being employed at a large, really large (stock exchange noted) engineering company and did construction site, sub-contractor and factory site visits.

Short answer: I have it, I use it when I deem it necessary.

I'd like to think that if I didn't have one I would buy one for occasional use, but I guess in reality I'd wait until I had a really close call like with my eye a couple of year ago, drilling over head. (The point when I took the whole PPE thing more serious after in private life)

All good thoughts. 

Yeah, I think I'll get one. I have cut down tree limbs without one, and do move around in a shallow attic that has lots of exposed roofing nails.

And I don't trust myself to stop the project and buy one when a situation arises where it's obviously called for.  So I'll buy it and stow it.

So that will make 7 out of 8 on that safety graphic.  Gonna give that high-vis safety vest a miss  [wink].

Tree work is a definite activity for a hard hat. Had a couple of friends knocked silly limbing trees. [eek] [eek]
