Got some pieces from a retiring woodworker. Best guesses to species?

My best guess would be big leaf maple based on bark and heartwood color.

That was my best guess too, although alder was mentioned as a possibility, but the bark doesn't look like alder, and it's considerably harder than alder.

Agreed, the bark doesn’t look like alder.  Nice piece of wood for sure.
