Narrow guage stapler

I am thinking of getting a narrow guage stapler for fixing thin plywood backs to units I build. I have seen a Bostich one available in the UK for about £130  from Screwfix and a bit cheaper elsewhere, or they have a Stanley for £80. I would rather get something decent. My Senco 18 guage wore out after about 3 years and I'm on my second Bostich.
(They are all much too expensive in France  a Senco stapler is about 300 euros before tax so I will probably buy one in the UK)
Any guidance from anyone with any experience of these would be very welcome.
Regards,
Richard

[eek]  You probably don't want to know how inexpensive they are here in the US.......

My contribution may or may not be of use.  I used a cheap Menards store brand 18 gauge narrow crown stapler to attach some 1/4" plywood to a floor.  Made the floor smooth for sheet vinyl.  First one worked well for 1000 or so staples.  Second one, which the store gave me when I took the first back and said it stopped working, stapled a couple more thousand staples just fine.  Based on my experience, I think the cheap no name 18 gauge staplers will work just fine.  No reason to spend 100 Pounds.  I'm sure in England you also have the 20 Pound no name tools.

Richard  I use a Bosch STN150-18 Narrow Crown Stapler, it works great and has given me no real concerns. I like it because I can use from 1/2 to 1 1/2 Staples in it.
Hope this might help

Sal

My experience is that the two red-top Senco 18 ga. staplers are the only ones that have enough butt to completely sink an 1 1/2" staple in hardwoods.  They are expensive in comparison to the Senco DYI guns and other makes of staplers.  I have tried and returned Bostitch, Hitachi, Fasco and Makita guns for being underpowered.

Richard:
Have you looked into repairing or getting the parts you need to fix your Senco?
I have the SLX25XP and it has been a great gun. Of the 3 Senco guns I own it has not given me any problems.
When I had problems with my 23 g gun I watched my rep take the head apart and put it back together. Not that complex a machine.

I have a Porter Cable also and have had no problems.  But then again I don't use it much either.

Thanks that's a good idea. I did take it apart, but the problem over here is that the base price is so much higher and so parts etc are too expensive. I am afraid it has long since disappeared inot a landfill somewhere. I absolutely hate throwing anything away but my senco really didn't seem engineered to be repaired.  That's one of the reasons I like festools (although I wish they'd fix my Carvex  [wink] )
I am ashamed to say I have a really cheap chinese 23g pinner from Axminster - they are all just too dear in Europe. It has no security so you can fire of the pins across the room at will. It really should be illegal, but a 23 g is around 300 dolars in France if you can find one.

Richard

Richard:
I can sympathize with the costs there.
My wife wants to go and visit my brother and sister-in-law in Paris. They live close to Roland Garos so she checked out the tickets to the French open  - $1,500 bucks for one seat.
I hate it when tools don't work properly and when they stop working in the middle of a project you really want to throw it away.
My rep did tell me that the Grex and the Senco pinners were made in the same plant in China. I didn't believe him but it's irrelevant, the Grex is a much better designed machine with more pin length range. I eventually bought the Grex. Should have bought it first.

Paris is expensive even compared to living out here in the sticks. The senco 23 g I looked at yesterway was just over 200 euros before tax. It was labelled made in Taiwan. I looked at a German made pinner 300 euros before tax. I would like the Grex as it seems to be the only one to stop you firing blanks, but it doesn't seem to be available here.

Richard

I can attest that the DuoFast 1848 is a production quality unit.  The model I have holds two full sections of staples.
